I will be buying this compressor soon. What size wire do I need to run for this compressor? It will be installed approx. 30 ft. from the main breaker panel. TIA

5 HP = 3730 W. At 230V that's a bit over 16A running load. Startup will be more, so you should probably be OK with a 30A circuit running 10/2 wire. I'm surprised the manufacturer doesn't provide the electrical requirements.

Amps should be listed on the motor plate if not in the owner manual.

Quincy recommended a 50 amp breaker for my 80g, 2stage, 5hp, 17 cfm, 175 psi. Baldor motor states 23 fla. wire gauge for was based on future welder addition so I went with 6g over 75' and went with 60a breaker.

You only need a 3-wire connection if the appliance is running both 120 and 240 volt circuits, such as a dryer, ovens or range. For 240 V only you only need two hots and ground... no neutral is required.


The 30A breaker is only a guess based on the 5 HP running load. The manufacturer must provide a spec on the unit that will state the requirements. Try to find a PDF file with the installation instructions. Good luck.

That comp will be well served by a 10 wire and 30A breaker. I think if falls in to the legal limit where it would run from a 12 if its all a guy had but since you got to get wire a 10 isn't going to hurt, you are doing your own work, the cost difference is minimal, why not give it a little extra.

Nice compressor. I was looking at the same unit but dropped down to the 60 gal unit/single stage. I think ss5l5. Much higher cfm and $150 less. Maybe something to consider.

A true 5HP draws 28 amps.

28 amps x 125%= 35 amps= #8 Romex or #10 THHN minimum.

Minimum 35 amp breaker.
