I have just purchased a new compresor that is 230V and 15Amp. My question is I already have an outlet where I want to put the compressor that has the required 12/2 wire to it but the compressor is set up to be hardwired can I hardwire into the existing in-wall box without any issues? I realize I will have to change the breaker out in the box as it is a single pole 20A currently. Thanks for any help.

If your existing 12/2 is 120V blk and white, you would need to use both for hot legs. Not sure about a white wire that isn't a 'common' (aka eventually GND) anymore. Some people put red tape on and call it a red wire. But otherwise yes use a cover with a k/o and run some flex to the comp.

Still could be too small wire.

What is HP of the electric motor ?? Post up PIC of the motor plate.

For Air Compressor, the motor plate HP determines wire size and breaker.

Technically #12/2 NM-b is too small because wire for motor circuits is sized @ 125% of NEC table FLC.

17a(3HP motor) * 125% = 21.25a

NM-b wire is limited to 60* c ampacity which is 20a.
