Another Craftsman Wood Lathe

I skipped going to the sales last weekend but a friend went out and will call me if he sees anything on "my list".

Early Friday morning I get a call and this is what I agreed to pay 30.00 for.

Does anybody own this model of lathe? I'm missing the tool rest and want to know what it looks like so I can search for a replacement.

BC, I had one like that a while back, I will try to dig up some pics of the tool rest. It's pretty simple.

It's easy enough to make up a rest BC. A bit of plate for the bed with an upright, (can be tube, rod or whatever else you have to hand), and then a bit of angle for the rest on top of the upright will make a temporary alternative until you drop across something more fitting.

That was 30 wasted.

I have to ask; Why? Nothing more, just why. Have you never heard the saying:

"If you can't say something nice, say nothing"?

Seiously mate, that was just a pointless, worthless comment which wasn't even thrown in with any useful response in any way or form. I'll honestly never understand why people do that. Just because you personally see no use for something does not mean it has no use or worth. If you think something is worthless, cheap or **** in some way, at least back your comment up with valid reasons as to what may be problematic areas with a piece and what to look out for, or advice on how to rectify known weaknesses. As is, that just comes across as a:

"I'm not getting any from the wife and just have to take my frustration out on random people"

type comment. Honestly, personal opinion is one thing, but at least have the decency to back it up with reason or explanation, which might actually make a pointless comment at least slightly worthwhile. As is, that is a perfectly functional item, in decent nick, which will work well for anyone who just wants to do a bit of wood turning.

When I was a teenager, my dad had a POS wood lathe that was far worse than the one posted here and I spend countless hours making odd bits of this and that out of scrap wood. Still have a few goofy looking candlestick holders in a box in the basement!

I would have loved to have had a lathe as nice as the one posted!

OK, allow me to become decent for you. There is no motor shown. That's 50 bucks minimum used. No live or dead center, no chuck. There's no tool rest not to mention no ******* tools either. So, by 'wasted money' I'm saying loud and clear that was a poor purchase that will either end up on the scrap pile or cost more than one with all the parts and tools needed to start turning.

I buy used machinery all the time. I got the same lathe with everything for 50 bucks. The cheapest tools for sale used compared to the cost new are small cheap wood lathes. I'm sorry that I pissed in your cereal but that's the way I see it, money wasted. Prove me wrong.

That's definitely a more useful response. We each have our own definition of what's a worthwhile buy and what's not. Motor, tooling etc. are only concerns if one doesn't already have some knocking about, for example. Personally though, for a base lathe unit in decent nick, I'd still say that $30 was a decent price regardless of whether it has any extras with it or not.

Some of us approach this from a sellers point of view, (I'm guessing that may be your approach generally, buying and resale?), and some of us collect purely from a buyers point of view, quite happy to spend time restoring, finding parts to finish something off etc.

Everything from personal perspective, opportunity, location, availability of items etc. all conspire to affect each persons expectations. For one, I've bought some absolute sheds of a machine in the past, but I'm quite happy to do so on occasion, even though they could likely test the patience of God himself when it comes to getting them restored and running. We're each to our own, to put it simply. Half the fun of owning a machine can be the working on it to make it usable.

If that's the goal, fine. If the goal is to buy a usable machine then one ought to buy the most he can in the class. Honestly, there's not enough there on that lathe to consider parting it out.

However, there may be a marriage in the future. Somewhere there's a broken base of that model with all the attachments and tooling. One of the two owners can have a working lathe. If that turns out, then it might not be a waste.

Let's hope.

It has the dead center drive; the angle is wrong to tell if the live center is missing.

I bought a perfectly adequate motor for a lathe that size yesterday for $5. (and have a half dozen more in the garage, and I'm 99% certain BC does too.)

A rest is about the easiest fab job imaginable.

To a re-seller, I'd agree, too much. For a user, I don't see an issue. YMMV

Ii might have the DC but it doesn't even have a handle on the hand wheel.

This thread really stirred the hornets nest. The lathe is not a basket case by any means and is really nice shape

I took some quick pictures since I was leaving town in about 30 minutes after I posted them

The tail stock doesn't have a handle on the hand wheel because that's how it came factory.

As for tooling, I've got just about everything needed to start an amateur on turning some wood.

Good thing I have a few 5 gallon buckets of Craftsman/Buck Bros wood chisels/gouges I buy when I see them.

As for motors, how does an overseas container full of them sound ? Not included in the pic of the lathe is a newer Baldor 1/2 hp, 1725 rpm that will be sold with it.


The only thing I'm missing was the tool rest and banjo clamp. I found the rest and I just wanted a factory clamp so it was original looking.

There was one listed on ebay previously and it sold for north of 50.00 bucks. So if I "wasted" 30.00 on this lathe, how will it be a loss if I part it out for over 200.00?

That changes things completely. The Baldor motor is worth 2wice what you paid for the lathe. You found the tool rest so the thing is whole.

I'll take back what I said. You done good. Hope you get a stepped pulley for the motor. That's another item when not included can generate some extra expense.
