I have one. It's fine for light duty bending. You won't be building frames or roll cages with it. Decorative wrought iron and bracket projects are easily accomplished. I've bent 1/2 x 1/2 square solid iron no prob. It does scrolls too with the attachment up to 3/16ths.

i would be bending flat cold rolled , maybe 10 ga. or 1/4" x 2" up to 3/16"x 2",
i'm looking for nice smooth arcs. is this equipment up to the task? or a waste
of time and money?

I've used many from different brands, 1/4" x 2" bending is going to take a good effort on your end. It's more of a work out at that point, but doable. The "is this the right tool for the job" question is going to depend on what radius bends you want. They are more for sharper, small radius bends. You might want a roller if you plan on making large radius, smooth curves.
