Hey guys, I need some directions on this gate project.

I think I've decided on the Liftmaster brand and a swing gate will only work. I touched on the bi folding gates, which are cool, but out of my price range. I Would like the gate to match my fence from the outside.

Should I go with a 6x6 PT or a 4" square tube for a post.:dunno:
What kind of hinges do I need?
I will cheat  with a wheel at the end of the gate for support. I also read mixed reviews about drilling holes in the tubing for the 2x4 (see 3rd pic from top). The 1st picture looks like they used some brackets for the 2x4's.

At the bottom I attached a picture of my driveway.

Here are some pics I found online of the framing I'm interested in. :eek2:

This is a 14' swing I made out of 2" hss w/.100" wall. The post is 4" hss w/.25 wall, bolted to a 2 x 2 x 2 concrete pad. Made my own hinges with sealed roller bearings. It use's a Liftmaster la400 to open along with a 600lb mag lock to keep it closed. It swings fine without a wheel for support.

I would pick up some 1 1/2 inch square tube steel and some heavy duty turn buckles and weld up 2 frames for inside your fence like your first picture and build/affix 2 fence panels to it. Use 6x6 posts at the ends and some heavy duty hinges that can be found and any farm supply store...

Nice Whiskydink, but he doesn't have all the added wood weight. I used 6x6 PT on my manual gate for the posts each side with an 8' opening and 4' doors. They worked fine but the PT did twist a bit not enough to cause any problems and still working after 20 years. I think I would use a metal pole or 4x4 square post now. Also you can drill a few 1/4" or 3/16" holes to hold the 2x4 wood for the fence no problem.
I't looks like the driveway slopes so the wheel is for support at the open point or closed?

The wheel would be mounted at the bottom end of the gate for support. The driveway is actually pretty level. I sawthis at the scrap yard, not sure if this would be over kill. Good to know about 1/4 or 3/16 holes.

$.40/lb for scrap isn't great price

I would go for 6x6 for looks but 4x4 tube is going to be plenty assuming you keep the gate weight down and don't build it out of all .25" wall thicknesses.

I wouldn't do a wood post, I also would use J-bolts or epoxy set over wedge anchors or embedding steel tube into ground.

Unless you have a lot of sunlight ( I dont as Seattle WA gloom never kept it charged ) you wont like that solar power supply I went to a 110v motor on mine.

I'm sure prices of scrap varies by region :dunno::dunno:
How much is it currently in your area. I don't have much experience on buying scrap. :headscrat

How long did you run solar? Which unit do you have?

Good eye!
I did not even realize the gate would drag if it swings inwards, because of the incline So, I guess the gate will have to open outwards to avoid any dragging on the driveway.
