Another driveway “sealing” question

Seems driveway sealant is a topic where half feel it helps the driveway and the other half say it does nothing but make driveway look pretty. Ive been right in the middle and lately the simple cost has driven me from doing it. I have about 1,200 Sqft of asphalt. Half is 5 years old and the other half is about 17 years old. I got a few quotes and they were all over $1000 for clean, fill cracks and apply coating.

Guy stopped by out of the blue while i was outside and asked if i was thinking of seal coating. Yada yada he gave me an onsite quote for $300 to do clean, fill cracks and apply coating. He is a 1 man crew, sprayer in his truck etc etc. He is semi local. Was pretty high on his sealent (GSB-88). Said he is banking on getting other jobs after people see mine. I did the calc and i couldnt do this myself for this cost.

Im very leary but wost case i get cracks filled and grass pushed back off driveway along with a matching pretty black driveway for 6ish months no matter if it actually seals or not.

Is this a no brainer to do it?

If someone made me that offer, I'd take it.

Like you said, at the end of the day it'd be worth it for looks alone.

Those scammers drive around all the time and hit people up. "hey, we had someone around the corner cancel and I have to get rid of this hot sealer before it goes bad...i'll give you a deal if you help me out. My boss is going to kill me if I come back with it full".

IMO, If it has never been sealed, leave it be, but do get cracks addressed.

Ask him about other places in the area he has done it. Look at them and see if you can talk to the buyers.

So let's say it was sealed prior, and now has cracks and the appearance of needing sealant again? What do you use to fill the cracks?

I got hit up buy a "spray n pray" and bit at 400 + made them do some edge patching. They did a horrible job on the edge patch and the sealant lasted about 9 months. They said exactly the above.

The company that did my driveway came in 2 trips (same day). First guy came and put sand in the large cracks, then used a hot fill over all the cracks. 2nd crew came with the liquid asphalt or whatever they use and sprayed down the entire driveway. Of course they started by carefully applying sealer around where the house and sidewalk meets the driveway.

My cost was around $400 for crack sealing + $800 for sealing.
