Another electric heater (King)

I am going to have to go elect. with my heat. I have a 24x36 shop with 24' side walls, It has a lift inside.

I was thinking that I am going to need a larger heater then the G73 because of all the extra volume inside the building. I am looking at these units.

I am looking at the 10kw unit for my shop.

anyone have any experence with these folks or these units. I guess a second option woul be 2xG73's but I would rather just have one unit if possible.

I am also not sure that I need that much, the building is a pole building but it does have SOME insulation in it.

Cherokee what part of the country are you in . Have you looked at the mini split heat pump systems.

Still no word on this heater? I would like something larger then the 5kw G73. I guess I will just take a chance on it and see how it works out.

I went ahead and pulled the trigger on this heater...just ordered it tonight. When it comes in and I get it installed I will let all know how it works out.

Do you have a 240 line for it already? Where are you going to place it? I've got lines everywhere in my shop, but only a few 240's, and they are low to the ground for welders. And only one 240 up high for the lift that will be coming eventually.

I will have to run one but that is no big deal, I will take some pics as well after the install.

My lift only needed a 30amp breaker, this thing wants (IIRC) 80amp breaker.

Sounds about right for a 10kW electric heater.

10kw calculates to be 41.7amps. I don't think it should need an 80A breaker. I run my 4.8kw heaters on 30 amp breakers.

80AMP ??? Good lord. Is that accurate? If it is, that puts that heater out for me with a 100amp subpanel.

I actually have a similar heater to this one. I have a 10KW dayton that runs on 220v. I live in a very cold area, northern Michigan. I have ran this heater for three years with no issues. I do not run it all the time. I only heat up when I plan on working out there. It will keep the garage at temperatures up to 70 with no real issues. My garage is 28'x36'x11.5', the ceiling is r39 and the walls are r13. I do use a 50k btu propane forced air heater at start up to get the temp up quickly then shut off the propane. Do to the height of the garage it originally took a long time to heat up but after I installed 2 56" steel ceiling fans it heat up much quicker and really helps maintain an even temp. I think you will definitely need some ceiling fans since you have 24' ceilings. The cost to run the heater is $1.10/hour at start up and it will cost $.36/hour after the entire garage is up to temp. This is based on my electric cost of 11 cents per kw hour.

Pics of said garage with 24' walls are in order What is the building, an old warehouse or something? If so, is that heater going to do the job? Heat rises, so you are going to need some ceiling fan help to help push the air down I would think.

Ok...so I got the thing installed this Saturday. I was wrong on the breaker it was 50amp...hay I was going off my old man memory.

Sorry no pics yet, I forgot to take the camera out there, but the walls are so tall because of the lift that is inside fans...bla bla bla.

The plan is to only turn the thing on when I am going to be out there, so Sunday I went out to get the to give the thing a test. It was 16F outside and 16F inside the shop. I started up a 30k Propane heater and the electric heater. I figure that if I use both to knock the temp up quick then the electric can be on for a shorter time and do less damage to the electric bill. I let both run for about an hour, (I was in another barn working on a tractor and lost track of time) when I got back in the shop it was at 65F and felt pretty warm. I killed the Propane heater and turned down the electric a little bit past where the thermastat would ccycle. I came back in another hour or a little bit more and it was sitting at 50F. I had to take off my heavy coveralls and jacket and started to wrok on a motorcycle. The heater would cycle every now and then and seemed to keep it at about 50F. Good for a sweat shirt and working.

The air that blows out of the heater is not very warm at first, I guess it has a hard time warming up 16F air, but when I went in when it was 65F the air coming out was pretty warm.

I think this is going to work, a little more use and I will see the damage to my elect bill, it is on a different statement from my house so it will be easy to see the impact.

So far it has been working great. I have had one problem tho...during the last snow fall we got abut 7" of the white stuff. The shop is kept at mother natures temp when I am not in there so it had lots of nice white fluffy snow on the roof when I went out there. I fired up the heater and came inside the house to give it a chance to warm up. When I went out I almost got killed by snow falling off the roof. When inside along the top of the roof where the two sides meet there where spots where water would just pour out....like you where to empty a milk carton....guess my building is a little vented as to speak. Good thing all the electrical is in dry spots...I will have to keep an eye on that....pretty strange....I had been in there during some pretty heavy rains and no water inside...gonna have to figure that out.

As to the heater...the instructions that come with it...well they flat ****....but if you know how to wire up stuff you can figure it out. The heater is working great keeping the shop at 60...I am very happy.

It sounds like you need some insulation. I have about two feet of snow on my garage rood and no icicles on the edges. I have R50 in the attic. The temp in the garage is 60 degrees. Today the outside temp was around freezing so it is quite warm outside.

There is a little...as in very little insulation in there. More would help...but it is a shop, the current heat and AC setup keep it to where you can work on things during the coldest days outside...so far the coldest I have been out there is -5F. The heater will cycle every once and a while and keep the shop at 60F....and that is a little warm if you are working...I would take off my sweat shirt. In the summer I have a 220v window AC and I will keep it to where you can live in there during the hot and humid MO summers....just getting the moisture out of the air is a big help in the summer...my tools started to rust very fast last summer.

Pretty happy with the setup.

Thanks Cherokee, we're probably not that far apart from each other as I'm in North Central Missouri - we had the snow too but I still don't have the heater yet - finally got ahold of the supplier and he said he was having phone issues, filed a complaint with PayPal and got a reply within a couple hours but still no tracking number as yet.

Anyways I'm having an electrician install mine so hopefully the directions issue won't be a problem. I have about 2/5ths of my barn insulated and have been waiting for the weather to break to get the rest of it done and have it separated by the large poly tarps. One day while working on the side that I'd insulated I had to open the tarp up to move materials in, I could hear it raining on my newly installed Prodex insulation...I thought wtf for a couple seconds. Once the tarp was back in place the rain stopped and the propane heater heats it up to 60F in about 12 min. from 30F, installed a temporary downdraft fan and it stays above 45F for about 15-20 minutes. Looking forward to getting some "QUIETER HEAT"! btw I had them add a transformer to the heater for lowvoltage thermostat so that what the supplier said is taking my order longer. Will be interesting to see how they compare.
