Another epoxy question

I just added a small workshop to my existing garage. Since I am parking a couple of motorcycles in there and not cars, I thought I would put a 2 part epoxy floor with flakes down. Here is my question. Can I put painters tape down for a clean line to end the epoxy at the door, or do I need to continue it under the door to the edge of the apron. Would it be more prone to lift at an edge like that, or could any water that seeped under the garage door get under the epoxy.

Thanks for the help,

Dave

Dave,
I ended the epoxy at the door with painters tape. In some spots there was a clean line, in others, the epoxy spread between the porous concrete. Your door will cover it anyway. If the epoxy is thick on the tape, it will be difficult to remove. You may need to cut the expoxy over the tape with a utility knife.

I called the company about running the epoxy under the door to the end of the concrete and was told that sunlight "could" turn the coating yellowish. Also, I thought moisture could get under the epoxy easier and may cause it to lift or peel.

Hope this helps.

Tape does work great but try to pull it before the coatings sets up. I would not go outside the garage door with and epoxy due to UV stabilty. But, with our coating it is not a problem what so ever. I believe that if you stop short of the edge than you do run a higher chance of having that edge getting peeled back vs. going to the end and over the front lip "if that makes sense" you can check out many pictures of this at http://www.citadelfloors.com/photogallery.htm and purchase a DIY version of the product at www.rocksolidfloors.com.

I've been installing epoxy floors for a year now. My first garage - I made the mistake of applying the epoxy past the threshold of the garage door (where the door hits the floor) and direct sunlight ruined the epoxy that was outside of the closed garage door within 1 year. I had to go back and remove all of epoxy that spoiled, which was not fun. Luckily, it was only a 1 foot by 20 foot section.

Also, if you run a tape line to act as your guide for a termination line, be sure that your tape is pressed down the entire length of the tape line. Otherwise, epoxy may "bleed" underneath the tape in certain parts leaving a "not so clean" line. Some people prefer to have us install metal thresholds over the line.

I would back it up a few inches past the inside of the door. Since it takes 1-4 days for Epoxy to fully cure you can put the doors down and not worry about the marks or bonding.

Hey ragincajun...did the Epoxy fail or just yellow? I wasn't sure what you meant by ruined. What Epoxy brand did you use and what color was it? I don't suppose you have any photos of what the ruined Epoxy looked like? Thanks
