another floor jack question

My wife just bought me this.

She may not be an expert but she understands some basics. She told me that it was the only 4-ton model they had in stock and even though it has some plastic parts, she knew I needed one so she bought it as a gift for me.

My question for y'all is this: if this is available at another local sears, should I exchange the other for it.

They are both 4 ton Craftsman Pro models with the "speed lift up the chassis" feature which I like. The silver one is $23 more and is a "low profile" which I do NOT need right now (who knows about the future). The silver one just looks to be better-made in the picture but that may be a function of the photography. I dunno.

Is the ultimate answer that they are both from sears and therefore will be POS's anyway?

I guess its like anything else: how much do you want to spend and how long do you want it to last? I mean every jack that sears sells is made in CHINA; if you want to get a sense of people's experiences read the reviews on Sears website. I will tell you that the jacks do not have rebuild kits for them and they will sell you a new power unit which is close to the cost of a new one. I'm probably not telling you anything you don't already know but if you want a good jack that will last you will have to pay more then $100; unless you find a old made in USA jack used somewhere. One classic jack that is still MADE IN USA and still available is the blue/yellow Lincoln style sold under the Hein-Warner brand; totally rebuildable and probably be a once in a lifetime purchase! :http://www.shinnfuamerica.com/(S(qqznjo45loc54x450ga0bjv3))/Products/Product_Categories.aspx?ID=6

Read the reviews for that jack posted on Sears site. (THE REVIEWS FOR THE OTHER JACK YOU ARE CONSIDERING ARE JUST AS POOR AS THE ONE YOU ALREADY HAVE!) You are in a bit of a pickle though since the wife gave it to you. I would suggest keeping your mouth shut and using it (with jack stands of course) till it shoots craps if the reviews on Sears page are a guideline 6-12 months is all the jack should last anyway, then talk the Mrs into letting you spring for the more expensive jack mentioned above, that way you keep her happy and in the end you will get the better jack!

Hello guys, I'm kind of a lurker around here, but wanted to jump in on this. I found a website that sells stuff from Ranger Products at a great price. I've already bought one of their tool boxes and man is it ever sweet! What do you guys think of the ranger floor jacks?

I'd really love one of those cross beam adapters toward the bottom of the page

I don't think there is an advantage to switching to the more expensive model. If anything the one you have has better reviewer ratings. If you would hurt your wifes feelings by bringing it back, then you should just live with it. Smile and say "thank you honey, that's just what I wanted":)

I asked my wife not to buy me any tools. That way I never have to be displeased with any tool purchases because I make them.

Since it was a gift from your wife, I would keep it. Both jacks are probably the same quality and most women would get hurt feelings if you took back a gift from them. When we first got married and I had no tools, my wife bought me a set of ratchets and sockets from K-Mart. They weren't even as good as their Bench Top line. I still have them and will never get rid of them. She thought about me instead of herself and tried to do something nice for me.

Yup ... excellent suggestion; if she went out of her way to get you something nice (in her opinion) I would definitely keep it ...
