Hello from SW WI (the frozen Tundra)
Being retired and cheap I’m always trying to figure out how to save cash without sacrificing quality.
As soon as the soil thaws (May or June), I plan on starting a 24 x 32 garage.
The original plan was 2 x 4 – 12’s 24” oc with ½” plywood walls covered with felt and vinyl siding, which I bought last fall on sale at Menards for under $20/sq. They had it on sale and the 11% rebate both running for just a 2 day period.
Since it gets fairly cool here in the winter (-25°F), I planned to insulate and heat the garage. When considering how to cover the inside walls after putting up the batts and visqueen, it dawned on me that I would be double siding the walls if I used OSB, which makes the most since for durability and ease of hanging cabinets, tool, etc and cost.
Is there any reason I can’t use Celotex (Homasote, fibreboard, what ever you want to call it) on the outside and let the OSB on the inside be the structural part of the wall regarding flex, twist, etc. I don’t see the need to make each wall a box beam. The cost savings would be $200-$300. Granted, I’d have to
brace the wall temporarily until the corners were enclosed. Or I could plywood the outside corners and osb the inside corners for extra strength. And avoid the bracing issue entirely.
Any thoughts are welcome.
