Living in Southern California has some advantages just like everywhere else but not when it comes to submitting plans and trying to pull a permit. After submitting 9 pages of plans including Architectural sheets, Structural Engineered sheets and a Forestry sheet and waiting almost 10 months for every entity of the County I was able to start building.
I am up against a hillside so I wanted to push the garage back as far as I could to save some precious backyard space so I decided to excavate into the hillside that comes down and build a retaining wall. By doing so I was able to gain 14' back and to the side.

The next order of business was to dig the footing for the wall. As you can see the soil was rock by nature and we had to use a ripper hook on the mini excavater

The Structural Engineer I used leaned towards the "more is better" way of doing things as the retaining wall footings are 5' wide, 2' deep with a 4' deep key in the center with more rebar than is in my house footings

Building the wall at first was almost fun but I was sure glad when the last block was laid.

It was finally time to start on the garage part and I decided to go with a raised stem wall footing for the luxury of being able to hose out the floor when it needed it.

Thanks NightTrain!
With 27 yards of concrete in the wall footing and 13 more in the cells I doubt I will have any problem but if I do I am sure there's something more wrong close by.....snow was from earlier this year...even though its not supposed to snow in SoCal we are up at 3700 feet

Sweet build Nitro. That looks like a great layout - what dimensions. And the backdrop is wonderful too!

I kinda figured a racer might know what Ch3No2 was...lol
As far as dimensions...the tunnel on the left is 20 x 44...there will be an interior wall seperating the 20 x 20 room on the right after the building final and will be a clean room so to speak for engine assembly. The County didn't approve any interior walls and actually made me go file a notorized covenant saying I would have no interior walls, gas or plumbing so it wouldn't be considered a habitable dwelling....Calif *****!

Your secret is safe with us. Nice shop, good plan. Got the same "clean room" idea going together here - I can hardly wait for that kind of work space. Bonus - the city doesn't care much after the permit is let. I am required to do a final framing/electrical. The new city budget doesn't allow for a hired city inspector, so the final will very likely be a pass. There's so much unpermitted slap **** around here that any permitted stuff built with care gets a lot of automatic love, so to speak. ;)

Looks great! I have a similar build in that I am building into a bank as well. Did you consider building the structure into the bank instead of building a retaining wall and then the garage separate? I went back and forth trying to decide between these two scenarios but decided to go with using the poured concrete retaining walls as the first floor walls of my garage.

Yes I did but since I am in what's called an "Extreme Hazardous Fire Zone" the Fire Dept shot that idea down and wanted 360 degree access even though there are no windows in the back against the hill.

Very nice. I checked out the engine stand at the link in your signature. That is a very nice item as well. Your product?

Yes...a little side line I started 7 years ago when I wanted to build a stand for myself and some said you should sell these...Greg and Jason have 16 of them out of the 350 out there

Well it's been a while but we are ready for any rain coming. Roofing tiles next and then insulate and drywall hopefully before the holidayz.

Dan,

The shop is coming along very nicely. I wish I had the real estate to do something like this at my house. CONGRATULATIONS!

We have color!
Now to paint the inside...thinking a 4' light gray wainscot with a 12" Ruby Red stripe above that and then pure white above that on the walls and ceiling

Any pics yet of what you are going to be doing in there?

No pics yet...smaller 20 x 20 garage will be an engine assembly room and the tunnel garage (20 x 40) will be for housing whatever the engine comes out of

Curious about the floor choice?

I am curious too....It looks like VCT has won my decision.
I think I will go with the boring checkerboard in the middle with a red 1' border around that and a 4' border around that in light gray.
