I'm moving and will need to get a shop build going somewhat quickly to make sure its built in a timely manner (I have a lot of things being stored by a friend, taking up quite a bit of his space).

I've been looking around at ready made plans and the "design your own" type websites and I'm having difficulty finding what I want (and I don't think I'm being too crazy).

Part of the draw of the house is the hilly wooded terrain that is the bulk of the property, this does pose some limitations to building new outbuilding. Due to that there is basically one site the seems to require a minimum of reshaping the landscape, fairly near the house and will hold what I'm thinking.

Rough dimensions are 30x50 for the building itself. I also want 12' deep porches that wrap the long side facing the house and the back. The back porch to give me someplace to store the tractor implements and the tractor. The side to give some appearance and a place to have some chairs etc. and design a little landscaping around.

Any suggestions for finding a design/designer? This is the largest project I've ever taken on and the smaller ones where 100% DIY. Did a fairly large (16'x24') shed for example but that's peanuts compared to a large building like this.

The idea is the basically split it down the middle (slightly offset to give more garage space) and have a front garage shop for working on my project truck and tractors with room for the welding and metal working equipment and a back wood shop.

12' walls, maybe scissor trusses in the front, attic trusses in the back. The S gable end will house the garage door(s)

Doing a pole building ?

Most places that sell pole barn material can draw up plan for you if you can't do something like a basic sketch yourself. Come up with a basic sketch and take it to them. I believe Menard's has a pole barn builder on their website.

From what I can tell finishing out a pole building (fully insulated) will drive the price up higher than the stick built design I played around with on the Menards site and some of the other "instant quote" designs. Just over the course of the last week the Menards quote has dropped about 1,000 in cost so it looks like building materials might be settling down.

The down side is that the Menards site can't tack on the wrap around porch for either design, so a "permit" ready plans wouldn't be included. Talking to some people in the area the Township is easy to work with assuming the plans are submitted in full. They get a little sketched out with field modifications.

Also for aesthetics the building will be vinyl sided and roofed to match the house.

When looking into building my garage i tried the menards diy thing and and had a alot of wasted time in it and still not happy with the results. I went to a local lumber company. In half the time he had plans and even a google map with garage on my lot to show city for approval. I also ended up buying my materials from them ,yes it cost alittle more but one stop shopping and did not have to return one board because it was warpped or twisted.Don't get me wrong I love menards, But i would go this route again in a heartbeat.
