Installing new 40 Amp hot tub. Panel is in basement and I need to leave the panel and go up through the rim joist into the attached unfinished garage wall. It's a short run. Up 4 feet and over 2 feet to the 50A spa GFCI disconnect. From there, continue in the garage from spa disconnect, up 4 feet and across the top of the service door, then down to where power will exit for the hot tub outdoors.

Can I do this all in NMB WH #8 3 wire Romex or does in all need to be individual THHN in conduit? Could I use Romex to the spa D/C and solid insulated wire in conduit from there? Is #8 sufficient for 40A or does an outdoor hot tub require #6 regardless of amperage? Thx in advance.

the indoor portion can be NM-b. anything outdoors needs to be THWN in conduit. FYI the disconnect needs to be in view of the tub and a certain distance away (too lazy to look). Id place a GFCI spa panel on the exterior wall and feed the NM-b into the back of it, then bring your LT flex down and into the tub

Thx. D/C no closer than 5' no further than 10' I think. I have to leave the D/C and go up over service door and over about 6' then drop down. Too far for all LT flex so I'll THWN to where it leaves the garage and have a short 3' LT whip. I think here they limit LT to 10'. I'm at about 19 with all the up and down over service door. I could do it all in NMb and just stub the exit point and finish the whip with THWN in LT flex.

will the D/C be accessible on the outside to people using the hot tub?
