Hi all.

I'm a newbie here, with a jack issue.

Here's what's going on.

I bought a used cherry picker to pull the engine and ****** out of my 4runner.

I used the hoist about a month ago, it pulled the v6, ****** and transfer case without any problems, I took the hoist apart to store while the motor was being rebuilt, the jack was stored on it's side.

Today I put the hoist back together to lift the short block out of my cars truck,
when I pumped the jack nothing happened, so I thought it was low on oil, bought a quart of jack oil and added most of the bottle to the jack till it reached the fill hole.
Still no action at all, nothing moves.

I've run a cement pump(stucco) for years, the jack is acting like a cement pump that has a rock stuck in the check balls, I'm thinking of removing the check balls and seats tomorrow, I was wondering if this is the correct course of action ??

Here are some pix, it's and old Taiwanese long ram jack.

There is no brand name on the jack, the markings are damaged.

I've looked at the jack thread, and looked at a bunch of diagrams.

Jacks and cement pumps are akin, a supply, pistons, check balls and seats, and a high pressure side .

1st.. Did you add the oil while the jack was lieing down or while it was sitting vertical on its base? It needs to be filled while on its base in the Vertical position, add till it starts to dribble out of the hole.

2ndly, When you laid it down in its side, It probably allowed air to enter the Intake port and you need to give your jack a quick bleeding.

To bleed.... Release knob in the Release position, Pump the jack 6-8 times (this will flush the path from the Reservoir thru the valves, Back thru the release) Now tighten the Release knob and try your Jack.

Your Jack utilizes a Cartridge type Valve system that is underneath the Pump Cylinder, They can be problematic, But Generally if they are getting oil they will still give some type of feedback and tend to have issues in the Holding Department.

I tried the tapping method, no effect.

When I bleed it I unscrewed the release valve quite far, until liquid dibbled out, there is definitely some water present.

Still no action at all.

Tapping won't have any affect, what the chances that you unscrewed the release enough to allow the ball to escape? If you followed my above suggestions and still no luck, position the jack on its side, release up and completely unscrew the release and if its equipped witha ball/seat style make sure everything looks good. It's possible that the release uses a cone style that is made into the release, it's easy to determine.. If the stem is flat on the end witha small seat it utilizes a ball, if its a pointed.. No ball is used.

I drained the jack thought the release valve hole, captured the ball.

About 20 drops of water came out with the oil along with some fine debris.
I sure the water has caused some rust to form inside.

You'd be surprised how easy it is to lose a 2 inch ball in a pile of wet cement when the pumps manifold needs to be disassembled during operation.

I'm thinking this may be the way to go, but I haven't given up on this old jack yet.

I'd just have to drill a hole in the base plate to bolt it to the hoist.

Always drain/fill via the fill plug, since you found debris, its time to tear into the main cylinder and verify the condition. I suspect that is your problem..

Been trying to get the top off, it's frozen, got liquid wrench soaking into the threads.

Sprayed Slick 50 1 Lube into the release hole to see what would flush out, did it a few times. YUK, lots of funk.

The small screws on the side of the jack are not going to come out without drilling and using an ez-out the Phillips heads are just too deteriorated from rust. The main cylinder nut still won't budge. So I'm going to flush it out some more, re-fill with oil, try it.

This jack is like an onion, the closer I look at it the more I cry, lol.

Words of wisdom from the jack thread, "Sit back and make sure you not gonna invest more than the jack is worth."

The Harbor Freight jack costs $48 plus tax.

Found a major problem, this little screen was completely clogged.

Cleaned it out the purple degreaser and screaming hot water, dried it in the sun sprayed it with the Slick 50, check balls are trapped so no threat of losing them.

Check balls working well.

But it seems that cleaning all the funk out of the unit caused the seals to leak, think the funk was helping keep the seals sealed.

The hoist will lift weight to a certain height, then no higher, it leaks down to a certain point then holds steady, has some leakage from around the main seal and release valve (when open)

But I got the short block out of my cars trunk and into the house.

There's no way it's going to lift the motor with the heads, ******, and transfer case installed, but at least it got the motor to the place where I going to work on it, so progress can continue.

I live in the mountains, Harbor F is about 45 miles and 6000 feet of elevation away.

I've seen older auto-trannys that were flushed and begin not to function right and then begin to leak.

So at least I don't have to make a special trip DTH(down the hill) to get the motor out of the cars trunk. And I've LEARNED a thing or two about jacks, I'd call that a good day.
I love to learn new things, and enjoy a challenge.

Winners don't quit, and quitters don't win.

I may have lost the war with this jack, but I sure won the battle.
