I've always had my compressor outside, bought a new one and I didn't want to go to all the work of installing it there. It also has a tube running over to a ball valve to drain the water so it would surely freeze in the winter.

The new one is in an OSB box with two thicknesses of sound board on the inside. It's so quiet it's not problem to have a conversation while standing in front of it. I was going to remove the front which is screwed on during hard use but I found that to be a PITA.

I added a door to access the pressure switch, drain and one that covers a fan that blows air into the box. Now all I do is turn on the fan and open the door where the pressure switch is when I know it's going to run more than it does during normal use.

Did you do anything to add an intake muffler? With my 120V belt drive compressor I got an 8 db reduction going from an unmuffled intake to one with a common "automotive style" intake plus some rubber hose. Not CAT quiet but well into the nothing else needed in my small garage.

The reason I posted this is because this works really well. I see a lot of threads asking about suppressing air compressor noise.

Inside the box is a 60 gallon 5 HP two stage Quincy air compressor. When running something like my belt sander or die grinder for extended times I'm sure the compressor would get very hot without any fresh air. Most of the time my air compressor will only run a few times a day when I'm in the shop.

When I do run my tools for an extended amount of time I can now open the doors, turn on the fan and have no worries.
