Hello!

I bought a 1940 starter home with a detached garage a couple of years ago, and I've been working on fixing up and improving various bits since then. Throughout researching various projects, Google has steered me towards these forums, which have been both entertaining and helpful.

Let's see, since I've moved in, I've:

  • Removed a few dozen trees of heaven (~60' tall) from the backyard
  • Built 2x 8'x2.5' raised garden beds
  • Moved a chainlink fence on the side up some twenty feet and installed a wider gate at the front
  • Run a dedicated 20A circuit to the bathroom through the attic from the basement (permitted and inspected)
  • Installed a bathroom vent and light
  • Installed a 100A subpanel in the garage (permitted and inspected)
    • Run 2" PVC conduit from the basement to the detached garage, some 150' away, and pulled wire
    • Installed 2x 8' ground rods
    • Installed at least four 20A duplex outlets per wall, and a dedicated NEMA 14-50R
    • Installed 6x 8' 9k lumen hardwired LED fixtures
    • Installed 2x new 9'x7' R6 garage doors with tracks, and one opener

Probably a few more things I forget. I've got a bunch more projects lined up, including a mini split, some car work, sprinklers, all kinds of stuff.

Here are the doors and tracks I just put up in the past couple weeks, actually one of the reasons I joined. With the springs adjusted as directed in the installation guide, the springs and cables droop when the door is up.

I was thinking I might tighten them up some more to see if that keeps tension on the cables without taking too much weight off and making the doors hard to close, but the hooks holding the springs don't have a lot of adjustment left. Also, with the low headroom, there's no more space to move the hooks higher.

I guess I'll pull some of the cable through the plate they tie to while the door is open to tension the springs more, and see if the door still closes. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I tightened up the cables last night to remove the slack while the door is open, and the door still rolls down fine, but the springs and cables don't sag anymore. Works like a treat!
