I found these things in a thrift store for $1 each, and couldn't say no, despite not knowing what they are (pliers are for scale.) Does anyone recognize them? The pins protruding from the adjustable jaws have sleeves that appear to be riding on bearings (they turn a bit rough, so I'm not sure.)

Bonus points for figuring these things out: an ad has been running on the local craigslist for a few months for two "tabletop machine shops," and they certainly look interesting, though the seller doesn't seem to know what they are either. The look like they could be home made, and built to perform a very specific purpose, but I don't know what that would be. Maybe they're for winding small electric motor armatures? I see a pair of timers on the left of the control panel, maybe a speed controller, and lots of bearing blocks, but nothing that looks like a cutting head or chuck. Whazzit?

For posterity, the ad text:
2 - tabletop mini machine shops in excellent working condition. Each tabletop has it's own breaker panel and switches which control the various motors. The motors are configured where they run at low or high RPM, giving more control. They have lights, built in micrometers and individual switches. The motors are Bodine Electric, Wadsworth and Westinghouse. All are in working condition.

Excellent for garage or small shop. Buy one or BOTH!

$275 each or both for $550

Top ones are for reforming exhaust pipe which is dented.
Jim

That's really neat. I could have used one of those a few years back when I was installing an exhaust on my truck and lined everything up from the front back and then went back and tightened the clamps up but didn't see that one of the joints had come out a little and the clamp only clamped the outer pipe and "dented" it so I couldn't slide the inner pipe back in far enough. Had to call around to all the exhaust shops to find one that was able to do 4" pipe. Found one that was just barely able to do it.

I think the bottom "Machine shop" is a grinder setup of some sort. Not really Home made, but unlikely to be a mass produced tool. I do think both were professionally made for whatever specific purpose they were for...
