I've been a member/lurker of the forum for years, and I thought it was time to introduce myself so I can start stealing some of the good ideas from the forum without feeling guilty.

I have a few minor garage improvements in store for 2015, and I've never been accused of being the sharpest tool in the shop, so I may be picking some of your brains from time to time. Now that I'm armed with a few X-mas gift cards, hopefully the new year garage improvements will start out smoothly. ;)

YS: happy to have another member willing to learn how to do things a bit better or teach us something.

nice looking dog by the way and welcome to our little group. have fun reading like it sounds like you have been doing for a while now and if you have any questions or answers now you can post too. we also like lots of before and after pictures so take plenty while doing your projects and post them when and where you can.

Awesome...I tend to take a million pics during projects, usually because I want to be able to remember how I did "this" or "that", or because I might want to modify things later and I'll need a basis to start from.

My yellow lab is a great dog! Shes' my best friend, foot warmer, newspaper fetcher, and a great co-pilot in the car. If she could only help me pic up women! :)

Andy: i found my bride at work 30 years ago so if you don't have an awesome girl there that you like and that likes you maybe i could suggest walking your awesome dog where the good looking smart woman might be doing the same. your dog won't do the talking, but she's a great ice breaker.

post up some pictures of her, your favorite old tools or tools you are thinking of buying since this is your own thread and posting pictures is a great asset to get answers to some questions you might have later.

I WISH I could find the right woman, but after being single for the past 15 years, I'm starting to think she doesn't want to be found! I'm cool with that. Married and committed guys keep telling me to stay single so I can keep all my stuff and continue to do what I want, when I want, how I want. Great idea...if only men could convince their "troublemakers" to go along with that plan, we'd ALL be single!

I will have to post up some more photos in the next few days of things I like, things I want, and things I already have. I could use a jump start for my brain, and an idea or 12.

Your username was so many of us...

Once upon on time...

A lot of truth in that statement!

Haha, I couldn't agree more with the both of you. That username was me too at one time (like when I started using it 12 years ago on various forums)!

I've been struggling over the past 10 years from major health issues including a rare form of cancer (with major surgeries), on top of an even rarer vascular issue I was born with. Even though I'm only turning 32 next summer, I feel like I'm 132 most days! The idea of changing my username to something better suited for me (now) only depresses me though, so youngnstudly it is.

I admit that Brokebutcheredtrainwreck is probably more appropriate.;)

So I really can't say that I have a large collection of old tools, but the favorites among my collection are the more expensive ones that I had to wait the longest to buy.

They include my Juki sewing machine and the Atlas 618 lathe that I bought as a basket case and refurbished. I figured I'd post a few Molly pics to round out this segment. ;)

As for the tools that I'd like to own one day, that's a much bigger list! In all reality, with my health issues, I no longer want or need all the tools I once thought I did. Plus I couldn't use them all anyways! But I'm looking forward to tackling a few projects this year, just for spite. ;)

For starters, I just got a Woodward fab bead roller for X-mas. I'm still figuring out just what I want it to look like, how I am going to mount it, and what I'm going to mount it to. :dunno:

Second project, a homemade bench vise with offset jaws. I have most of it tacked up and functional, but I need to iron out the details before fully welding it together. Again, I need to make a choice as to where and how it will be mounted. :dunno:

The third and most anticipated project I'd really like to start (and finish) this year is the freshening up of my old 40hp VW engine that will serve as the power plant for a backup household generator.

I will be putting the engine back to the factory fresh appearance, complete with all the decals, correct colors, stock parts, and industrial tin that VW used solely on their "industrial engines." A pair of quiet inline mufflers will be the only deviation from stock. I'm thinking a belt driven generator head will work nicely and keep the setup fairly compact, but funding will dictate how many watts I end up with.

Just an example of the generator head I'm looking at:

And a few examples (below) of VW industrial engines...first one is a water pump for a fire truck, second looks military:

YS: It looks like you have some great talent restoring old tools as well as raising a happy dog that will help to keep you leaning towards the young and studly side.

do you do upholstery with your Juki or did you just restore it to sell? it looks great as does the lathe and your modified wood top on your roller toolbox.

nice pictures overall and best of luck with the VW rebuild. you might want to start a thread about taking a VW motor and making a generator out of it or is there already one on GJ because i certainly don't know them all yet?

I don't know about great talent, but I'm certainly a little meticulous (I think they call that Obsessive Compulsive Delight....or something to that effect!:headscrat).

The Juki sewing machine is something I wanted for years, and I finally bought it about 10 years ago for doing hobby stuff (mostly car related). I like that it keeps me out of the cold garage in the winter, and out of the hot garage in the summer, plus a little music or TV playing in the background makes the motor noise much more tolerable. I really need to find a position that will allow me to stitch and fit bikini's to hot women all day long....I wouldn't even ask for a pay check!:bounce:

I was planning to start the VW generator thread when I get around to starting the project, but I was thinking of focusing more on the generator head aspect since there probably aren't too many people that have an interest in vintage VW engines. Sort of outdated (and expensive!) nowadays.

I think you could use nearly any lower horsepower 2, 3, or 4 cylinder gas engine from a motorcycle (or say, a small econo car like a GEO metro) with good results, a low level of operating noise, almost no real maintenance, really long life, and a MUCH cheaper overall price than buying a Honda or other name brand equivalent generator. Ingenuity and space would be required though.

Air cooled and FREE makes the VW more appealing for me, especially since I have a lot of history with this engine (I put over 136,000 miles of use on it in my teens/early 20's). Plus it's nearly self-contained, VERY easy to work on, and 2 average men can easily move it around or load it into a truck. I'm curious to see how much I can jet it down for fuel economy (it would get as much as 38.3MPG in the car on a regular basis).

I'll check GJ for other possible generator builds later today...maybe others will have some good input.:)

YS: sounds like you have the talent to maybe start building your own car from scratch so put that on your list of things to do in the years to come. right after building an old VW engine into a generator and sewing bathing suits for the girls with bodies that should wear them.

how about setting up a shop on some tropical beach?

happy new year and best of luck with all those projects

Haha, too late! I already have 1 project car sitting in the corner torn most of the way apart (waiting patiently for some attention) and a "fixer upper" that I drove for years and need to get running again. But I'd trade it all for one lovely woman in a heartbeat....as long as she likes washing and waxing things in the driveway while wearing one of my homemade "hand-fitted" bikinis. I could charge admission for that! ;)

My DAD, on the other hand, has 2 full project cars, a motorcycle, and a full restored car that he built years back (too nice to drive, but he won't sell it either). I grew up around old cars and hot rods, so I blame him for this "disease.":D If only he had become a doctor or lawyer!:scared:

Thanks for the well wishes, and happy New year to you as well.;)

YS: i'd say you have your plate pretty full so a full time 30 year old with a great body would not only take a lot of your time, but tool funds too.

i'm not saying to give up by no means, but you might get to fixing or at least moving your health in a direction you want your old tools to go. even if walking the dog AM and PM will help do that and take longer walks in different areas to get a different look and more exercise. not all great women would be a good bikini model.

whatever woman you end up with, if you do, they are a lot of work to keep happy hence the term happy wife happy life. I was single for 32 years and now married for 27 and every day is a challenge and a joy if you know what i mean. don't give up on the dream, but just keep moving forward one step at a time with the things you can change.

so enough of my fatherly, brotherly advice and let's see that old VW generator thread start so that project can get off the ground.

best of luck and again welcome to our group

Some one on here has a tag line to the effect of.....' choose your life partner wisely as they will determine 90% of your happiness'. Been married for 38 years and I can only wish I had read...and adhered to that bit of advice. Amen brother. But a good woman is a thing of beauty. Good luck.
