Another Nice Trip To Sears. Seriously...

I don't know if its spring fever & everyone is doing spring cleaning and digging out their old, broken tools, but tool warranty and Sears/Craftsman in particular has been a big topic this past week. So with that said, I remembered I had a 1/2" Chinese Craftsman ratchet I broke a few months ago and decided to take it in for replacement. Here's how it went.

When I entered the store, a young girl was working at the register. I asked if I could replace the ratchet, but wanted to know if there were any rebuilt USA's around. She checked the cabinet behind the desk, but could not find one. She apologized and called the gentleman with the keys over to aisle 4 to meet me. When he arrived, I asked him the same question. I explained how I had originally exchanged a USA ratchet for this Chinese one, and it hadn't lasted a year. (Granted the tool broke with a little persuasion, but when you're on the road with nothing else, it happens.) This time, he went to the back of the store and looked, but returned with nothing. He told me he hadn't gotten around to rebuilding the 1/2" ratchets yet. That's when the wheels started turning in my head. I asked him if instead of exchanging it for another Chinese ratchet, I could have one of the broken USA ones with a rebuild kit. To my surprise he agreed, went to the back again and returned with the "nicest one he had" and a USA rebuild kit. Even the girl at the counter was surprised and commented how lucky I was to get a USA ratchet. I actually shook the gentleman's hand and thanked him when I left. I don't know where you people are from, but this is the second time in a few weeks I have had a good experience at Sear's.

One thing - the direction selectors now included in the kits are made of a plastic material. I was a bit upset about it, but it is what it is.

After many struggles in the past, I took a pair of old tweezers I had in my box and split them apart. Then I bent it into the shape of the tool used to install the detent ball on the ratchets. Made it much easier than using a small screwdriver!

So now the next time you go to Sear's to replace a ratchet and they try giving you a Chinese one, remember this story.

And FYI that's not nail polish. I smashed it.

I had the same experience about 1 month ago swapping out an old Stanley made triwing.
They had nothing I wanted in the rebuild pile but I walked out with a used 84 tooth full polished ratchet and a kit to rebuild it.
I was very happy! The guy that assisted me that day was very helpful.

That's not a bad deal. Was the 84t USA made? Either way, it could never compare to the triwings. I love my 1/4" triwing. The 3/8's are ok, but not like the 1/4". Actually, nothing compares to a well made round head 1/4" ratchet.

I think the sales people have heard it from every customer and is tired of the complaining, and will do what ever they can for you if you treat them with respect and they will treat you with respect and try to help you where they can.

I took in a broken RP ratchet and the lady took out a box of rebuilt used ones from under the counter and asked me to choose one. Of course, I choose the nice premium one. A little scratched up but still nice.

As a former Sears employee, they don't pay enough or treat their employees well enough to really care. Customer satisfaction really isn't a corporate-driven goal, and that was never an objective they pushed on us unfortunately. That never stopped me (or most of the guys I worked with) from handing out rebuild kits to guys that wanted them or finding them a decent rebuilt USA ratchet. Sometimes that was difficult, as the stock guys who rebuilt them took no notice to the condition of the handles. Half of them they rebuilt were in pretty bad shape, so it got to where I would give those out to people bringing in ones that were in poor shape.

I also asked the guy if, when and where they sold the rebuilt ratchets. Unfortunately, they only use them for exchanges. I would buy multiple USA ratchets if I could.

a ratchet is as good as the kit inside it , the handle could be made on a submarine on the way to Pakistan.

I tried that over a year ago to replace a broken USA made teardrop quick release ratchet. They tried to give me a Chinese made ratchet and I asked if they had repair kits and I'll fix it myself. The sales people said they're not allowed to do that and don't have any kits. They told me to go to Ebay and see if I can buy one there. The sales people told me nothing more could be done and I had to take the replacement or nothing. I left and bought a kit on Ebay and fixed it myself. I'm glad you had a better experience then me.

The kit inside is the ratchet. I don't think I've ever seen or heard of somebody snapping or breaking a craftsman ratchet handle. USA or Chinese. Bending one is the extent of the stories I've heard and that was with a cheater. You can see in the picture I posted the 1/2" drive actually sheared off. That was a Chinese ratchet.

My tax preparer is a lady that also works at Sears and rebuilds ratchets. She looks afe ter me with tools. I was careful to have a metal selector ratchet rebuilt keeping the old selector instead of the plastic one. She says the Chinese rats are lubricated from the factory and break often. The premium ratchets last much better, but she has rebuilt them. Some were seriously abused. The low profiles last ok too.

Where can I get a metal selector for 1/2 drive?

I don't know, but I wish I knew prior to exchanging it because I would have kept it. I tried taking the metal selector off a flex head Chinese ratchet I have, but it just wouldn't work. The entire assembly was different and when I tried swapping the entire setup over it wouldn't seat properly. Oh well, I rarely use them anyways since I got my dual 80's.

I'd say keep an eye out for a cheap Chinese unit at flea markets with metal selector and then swap them out.

I have a VV and T1X. T1X has plastic selector. Maybe I will ebay the T1X when I have some dough for a snap on.
