I am building an addition on my garage and trying to decide what I what to cover the exterior walls with. The existing part of the garage is wood dutch lap siding nailed directly to the studs and has had vinyl siding placed over that. I am considering just using plywood or OSB on the addition and going back with vinyl siding. What I am wondering is if OSB will hold the nails okay to hang the vinyl?

You should have no problem using OSB. Are you going to insulate the inside? If so, you can always place insulating sheets first, then the vinyl siding. Overkill never hurts!

yes, thats how houses are built these days. Dont forget the house wrap. It keeps the moisture off the OSB

OSB will hold the nails ok. Staples work better than nails but take a special stapler for vinyl siding. I would aim for the studs anyway. A small mark at the top of the wall will work as a guide if you have a good eye for plumb.

Thanks for the quick replies. I am planning on using house wrap over the OSB and insulating the walls with a vapor barrier on the inside plus OSB is like $10 a sheet cheaper than plywood so it's good to hear it will work okay. Makes for a little more in the tool fund..lol!

No problem stapling into the OSB. If you try to pull off the siding the staples will stay and the nail slots on the siding will tear.
Do not nail the siding tight. The siding will need to float because it will contract and expand. The easiest way to get the staples to be a proper depth is to angle the stapler when you shoot the staple.
If you want to run aluminum over you fascia boards, most supply houses will run it through their machine for you, which save you the trouble of using a brake.
You will save money getting your material from a siding supply house over a big box as well.
