I am in the process of building a new house with a 3-1/2 car attached garage that I plan to heat with in floor Radiant heat. The garage will have 2"xps under and around the slab, R-14 walls and R-29 ceilings, one 10x10 and one 16x10 R-11 doors, total of 1000sf. I live in northern Ohio and plan to heat the garage to 50-55 all winter. We will be heating the house with a geothermal heat pump that has outputs to assist a 80 gallon water heater. We were originally planning to only use a 40 gallon unit (only two of us) and I was going to run the radiant for the garage off of a Seisco electric boiler in a closed loop configuration. I was recently wondering if I would be better off running it in an open loop configuration and going with the 80 gallon water heater for both domestic hot water and the garage heat to take full advantage of the geothermal assist capabilities. Any thoughts?
