TBA.....care to comment now? How do you like your crow....rare or burnt?

I will reiterate it is the exception to the rule.

For some unknown reason (slow news day or what have you) it got the attention of the news media.
Nobody has been convicted and I didn't see where anything was recovered.

Story time:
When I was in high school (around 1990). A class mate of mine got caught on video holding up gas stations.
Thru events i don't recall he got picked up by the law and confronted with said video.
The interview went something like this:
COP:We have video of you pointing a gun and robbing the Stop & Go on X steet.
Dale: Its not me.
Cop: Look at the video, that is you robbing the store.
Dale: Its not me.
Cop: Look at the video, its you.
Dale:That is not me
Etc., Etc., Etc.
Dale on video committing armed robbery goes home with no charges.
( I always hated Dale)

I don't think anything was taken in the Columbus new story, the would be thief set off the security alarm attempting to gain entry, no property was stolen; the security system did its job (scared them away) and so did the cameras (giving the law and news a picture to air).

Did you even read the 2nd news story that was posted yesterday? Nothing was recovered because nothing was stolen, the main owner of the van has been charged with attempted robbery...

Nothing was stolen.....and last time I checked....you had to arrest someone before you convicted them....the post was about them being arrested. I would suspect that a few months from now we might find out what their punishment will be.

But please share with us your experience and qualifications to back up why you think this is an exception and not the rule?

I think i did TWICE!
One: Dude in white van stealing my drills and equipment from work, totally useless.
Two: Dude i went to school with robbing Stop & Go's with no charges.

Two real personal accounts in my life that involved CCTV tells me all i need to know.

I put that in conjunction with my knowledge of Law Enforcement and it limitations / priorities i can apply LOGIC and see all i need to see.
A kid just abducted and burned to death and left in a ditch (which has happened twice this month in the area) OR look at some grainy pick of a random messican in a white work van stealing a drill, a tailgate, or the spare tire off of some rednecks truck, you think the cop will remember your video even exists?

Plus i don't have a dog in the fight, i can sit back away from it and see the picture, (because i am not trying to justify to myself the expense of the toy).

Does your insurance give you a break if you install a camera system?

Sure they might not work great, but something is better than nothing. If you get a price break for your insurance, it kind of pays for itself, so why the heck not put it in?

There was a scumbag in high school with me that shot and killed a gas station clerk during a robbery. No witnesses except a grainy black and white cctv. He was identified and arrested within a week. Still sitting in prison. Would he be there without the "useless" video evidence?

Nothing in this life is 100% certain, but it never hurts to tip the favor in your direction. How do you know that the person that robs you wont have a unique vehicle or park with the license plates visible, or some other instance that helps point in the right direction. If the cops dont have a lead, they cant do much but fill the report for your insurance.

Crimes against persons take priority over crimes against property....and depending on the size of the population vs. the size of the LEO department, crimes againsts property usually take no priority.
Worked for a large department store, video camera's were useless in prosecuting shoplifters. Only used to alert store security personnel for visual ID.

sorry theres no such thing. crime can and will happen anywhere. Dont be caught with your pants down

Speaking of which, I was curious to see who didnt clean up after their dog so I checked the camera at the back of my garage and found this guy. He goes through quite the routine before taking his pants down, including taking off his coat and putting in it the trunk. He also went back in his car to kill the domelight before getting down to business.

Cameras are fun, I have a few other clips of people looking through my yard, one of which where it looks like a guy sending 3 girls to break into my walk in door while he waited in the lane, they didnt bother trying when they saw the steel frame and door.

Security cameras and alarm systems do not prevent theft, they minimize the loss of personal property. Thats what it's all about, minimizing the amount of time a thief has in your home or garage. End of story.

To the poster with the 170 lbs Malamute, please post pictures of your dog ! As the owner of 2 Malamutes, 1 female (120 and over weight ) and 1 male (85and over weight ) both according to the breeder I can't imagine a malamute weighing 170 ! He`s got to be huge !

A good example.....but let me put things in perspective also using Busted Knuckles example regarding "Dale".

In the above example....I would be willing to bet that once they had the video proof, it then allowed them to obtain some physical proof....maybe they found the gun...maybe there was other proof he was in the area....but the important point is that the video gave them the clue they needed to zero in on the guy.

Regarding Busted's 'friend' Dale....if he was not charged for that crime...good chance there was no other proof....video is great....but there are people out there that look like other people.....without some other physical proof....yea, it would be hard to charge him....however, I'm willing to bet that the police were now giving him a lot of attention.

Now....lets look at GM's example....in the one where the guy is taking a dump....with a little bit of work, I bet you can pull off the plate #...take that evidence...the vehicle...and the fact that the guy in the video most likely looks like the registered owner....you now have a case....

Video alone in most cases will not lead to a conviction....BUT...it does give the police probable cause to start digging deeper.....
