Another Sears clearance sale thread

Stopped by the Oak Brook, Il store to see what's up. I was eyeing a 3/4 Craftsman USA ratchet. It was marked down last week to 55, supposed to have dropped price today. Well, last week they had 5. Today...... nada, zilch, nothing. The ratchets were gone. I think the saleskid from last week snagged them. Whatever.
The clearance still had misc. .97 cent sockets, mostly 1/4 drive. Not a good selection. All onesy, mebbe a twosy.
BUT - looks what they're doing is bringing in gearwrench big time.With a 50% off sale. Many displays of sets. I picked up a 9 pc. XL crossbeam combo set, 5/16 - 3/4. $29.99. I think I paid too much, what the hell. Also got a Gearwrench snap ring plier for 4.99. Some of these sets i think at 50% off, they'll have a hard time selling.
I did want the dual ratchet sae wrench set @29.99. Only had metric.
They also semi-restocked the Craftsman wrench/ sockets aisle. alot of chinese ****.

The Sears here in town seems to be reving up on their Craftsman Evolv ****. I asked the sales guy what the deal was and was told they want to compete more with Harbor Frieght.

God I miss the old days....

That was more directed at where a lot of the Craftsman tool line is going vs believing today's version of "most" the sears salesman. I gave up on that a loooong time ago when I tried to warranty a wrench and was told by one of their sales idiots that Sears no longer warranties any tools in store and that it had to be sent out. That got corrected real quick.

I wondered about the ratchets. Their is a guy on craigslist selling like 25 of them for $60 each, all brand new. I figured they must have went on sale, or he did a ton of warranty returns.

I wonder if craftsman will just get rid of all 3/4" drive tools, or if they will be replaced with china made ones? Guess it don't matter either way, neither appeal to me any.
If I wanted 3/4" drive I would go straight to Williams.

Kewl. I've been wanting one of those ratchets too. They are the same old style of the Moore Forge ratchets (box head) Craftsman had back in the late 40s and early 50s. Easy to rebuild.

New age of Craftsman tools? maybe the end of Craftsman tools. I just went through a full tool catalog, and most of the stuff was not even craftsman, but GW, evolve, etc. I was at my local sears the other day and a customer was asking about the evolve line warranty. The warranty is the same as any other craftsman product as long as the customer saves the receipt, so this could be the beginning of the end of Cman?

The Evolve are Chinese and IMO actually look pretty damn good, looks just like the stuff at Harbor Freight which to me always looked pretty good as well.

The Evolve stuff has to have a receipt to warranty it, just like Harbor Freight, mainline Craftsman just bring it in and it gets swapped.

The Evolv have a very shiny chrome, made in Asia and quite different from real Craftsman.

They are not bad tools. They are well made, nicer then the hf stuff. They have items that are the same as northern tools stuff.

I've got a 21 piece evolv wrench set that my kiddo got me for Christmas (its in a road box). It's great - I have never had any kind of finish or spreading issues.

My father bought one last week for $50 or $60 bucks, whatever it was and the tag on it said "Closeout" they had 3 left. He then went back this Monday to get another one and the ones marked "closeout" were gone and they had 3 on the shelf marked regular price, whatever that is, something like $80 or $90 bucks. His conclusion was that they took the "closeout" ratchets and put them back on the shelf...?

stopped in at a sears hardware, abouts 8 miles from the store previously mentioned. no widespread gearwrench, no clearance items, 3/4 ratchet (1 on the shelf) $110

Sears Woodfield has no gearwrench on clearance like oakbrook. The kid at Oakbrook who wrangler me up said the GW on clearance was old stock from the Backroom. Also said the 3/4 ratchets were. Sold for 55 and no addl discounts were taken. I overheard a bunch of lawn mowers were going on clearance also

just going off what i was told... 2 items i bought werent in the system so he had to look them up online then key them in.. thats why i started asking questions...if it was true i have no idea... think about it tho... take away the displays, stack on shelfs... its not as much as it looks like

ya oakbrook had all the gearwrench stuff on clearance long before it hit the hot deals thread... how do i know? i have a bunch of it in my ratchet drawer

Interesting.......... went to the downtown Chicago store. an olde style building, 4 stories tall, on State Street. on Friday, I picked up - on the clearance rack - none-sy, onesy, twosy, USA CM raised panel double ratchet and CM raised panel ratchet/open end wrenches, ranging from 4.97 to 7.97. picked up a total of 6. cleared them out. Today, same store, same rack, I was able to complete the set I wanted, which is (4) double ratchets, 5/16 to 3/4.
Also picked up a few metric single ratchet/open ends. Same price range, none more than 7.97.
Stopped by the Oak Brook and the Stratford Sq. stores. Mind you, all 3 stores have had their tool sections very recently revamped. All seemed up on the inventory. Oak Brook and Stratford had none of the wrenches on clearance. They had the same ratchet type box/combo wrenches locked up, and when scanned, full price. (I didn't notice this at the downtown store). Salesmen didn't know of any wrench clearance, other than what went thru here a coupla weeks ago.
At all 3 stores, the USA ratchets were gone, replaced with china.
Side note - local Ace Hardware store, dropped their Ace line and picked up Craftsman, about a month ago. Today I noticed all their CM ratchets were USA. .
Side note - local Sears Hardware, didn't have ANY thing on clearance.

Over the weekend I made (2) separate Sears online purchases for GW clearance items (a Torx set and some wrenches). I just received a UPS My Choice Delivery alert for (2) shipments from "COOPER TOOLS". Tracking shows they were picked up in Raleigh, NC (Apex Tool Group is located there).

I suspect a large majority of the Sears sales are being drop shipped directly from the manufacturer/distributor
