Another Sears Rant

In December of 08 I purchased two new garage door openers to install in my attached garage from Sears. I had never got around to installing them, or even opening the boxes. This week I decided that I wanted to go with Liftmaster 3800's instead of the trolley openers that I had, so I take the old openers back to Sears, this is where it gets complicated.

Upon walking into Sears a manager helps me and starts the return process, however when he gets to the refund portion, I explain to him that the cards that these were purchased with (two seperate purchases, a couple of days apart) were closed out due to theft. He ponders this for a second, then goes to ask another manager about how to complete the refund, leaving another clerk to take care of me. After a minute the phone rings for the clerk helping me and from the side of the conversation that I can hear, it is the second manager telling the clerk not to refund my money. After hanging the phone up the clerk sites the 90 day return policy and will no longer help me.

I have contacted customer care, and seem to be getting the same 90 day return policy spilled back at me. When asked why I can not return an unopened product which they still carry in the store the only response that I get is "90 days blah-blah-blah". Their reciept even says that if after 90 days you are not satisfied to contact them.

This is why Sears is going down hill, they are so short sited, that they cannot see that I return which will virtually cost them nothing will end up costing them a customer who spends about $5000 with them in a year between tools, and Sears card purchases.

I guess it's time to make my own policy and stick to it "No More Shopping and Sears, and Close Out the Sears CC" How's that for Satisfaction Guarantee.

that is why I have gotten to the point that the only things I ever buy at sears anymore are things that are such bargains that they cannot be passed up.
I have explained to several people with sears that my family bought sears in great quanity for a very long time and that the first thing they loose is the appliance purchases that we make for the rental homes
all tyey would say is 'were sorry to hear that'
sears has gotten to be about as dumb as dirt

Sorry guys ..... I have to disagree with this one. You bought something SIX MONTHS ago, now you decided you dont want to use it so you expect them to give you your money back ???????????????????????? I could maaaaaaaybe, just maybe, see doing an exchange for a different item, but personally I would be embarrased to even show my face expecting a return.

And .... if thier policy is no returns after 90 days ( I dont know if it is or not ) .... what makes you so special that they should ignore that policy. Personally I think it is good business policy on Sear's part.

Must be getting old ..... just my opinion,

Why would you expect them to take it back? YOU decided you didn't want them. They had the 90 day policy when you bought them. You should have made your decision within that 90 days. I see NOTHING wrong with them not taking them back. 90 days ok, 100 days maybe...but 180+...uh no!

This has nothing to do with Sears, and you know what, all the little mom and pops stores usually only have 10 day return policy. Sell them on ebay or craigslist for a loss and buy the ones you want.

That'll teach 'em! Haha, I tried that once with Home Depot. Sooner or later you'll be back!:lol_hitti:lol_hitti

Why not go to another Sears and tell them you bought them within the last 90 days, paid cash but lost your receipt. Get store credit.

Then, I would use the credit for something useful that I need and move on. It's lying but hey, you don't need 4 openers.

I also agree with everyone. It is past the 90 day window and they're not really obligated but I think if they gave you store credit, that would be cool. Of course, that is just my opinion.

I would have to go with what most are saying on this. You were past the return window...you have no real cause for complaint there. That said, if I were the store manager I would have taken them back (IF they were in brand new unopened condition) in the interest of customer satisfaction. Doing so would likely have made a very satisfied customer who will spend more money there in the future. But it seems not too many places consider this anymore.

This is my point exactly. I try to be resonable, and I understand that they were not obligated to return them. My point is that what would it have cost Sears to return them. They could have easily placed these on the shelf and resold them (as they had not been opened) and they had my money as an intrest free loan all this time. This would have resulted in a happy customer.

Perhaps some have missed it, but the first manager that I encountered was happy to return them since they had never been opened, only when he required help completing the transaction did I run into problems. Also not once did the second manager (whom the first consulted) ever speak with me and deny my return due to the 90 day policy, he only spoke thru the employee who said "I am sorry, I can not help you".

To me that says the second manager knew he could easily return these, but he just didn't what to deal with me.

I also know that I will not be able to boycott Sears totally, but I can easily take a few steps to make certain that I limit the amount of business I do with them in the future, after all as stated above the manager at my store has made it clear that he doen't wish to deal with me.

All of this is my opinion of course, and from the replies I may be in the minority, however this particular store has always given me nothing but indifference every time I have a problem at thier store.

If it were me, I would go to another Sears store, tell them what happened and see if they would give me a store credit. I wouldn't lie about it and I wouldn't get mad at Sears for following the policy they had in place when I bought them. If they gave me a credit, great! If they again said no, I would tell myself to pay closer attention next time and move on. Then I would sell them on Ebay or donate them to the Habitat Store for a tax deduction.

if its still a current item for them, then I dont see the problem. I have returned many items to Lowes or Home Depot even after 3 or 6 months and they have not even second guessed it.
good customer service is a big deal (for me anyway) and sears is sorely lacking in it.
I went yeaterday to sears to exchange and extension that the ball spring appears to have been broken. they ***** insisted that they are only available in sets and I pointed out to him that is not the case. his proof to the point that they are only in sets was they they did not have any in stock.
I told him that he needs to call the online number and get them to ship me one.
it was like talking greek to a french statue

I have to wonder if that by mentioning that the cards were closed due to theft didn't ring some alarm bells with them. Granted you had a receipt, but their normal channel to refund the money wasn't there.

My wife and I bought some fancy schmancy front load washer and dryer from Sears about two years ago. My wife never liked them but failed to mention that until after the exchange period had expired, during the six months we had some problems with the dryer, but it was fixed after a warranty. About six months after we bought them I called the customer care line to ask for a return. At first I got the blow off "outside of the return period" answer. I finally got to a supervisor and after much go around I finally asked if they would do an exchange if I paid a restocking fee? He said well yes of course. In the end everyone was happy.

i agree past the expiration date. as far as interest goes check your lowes card if you have one it is 37% and sonys new card is a wooping 72%. bought a floor model refrige at lowes saved 1700.00 and then used a low interest check to move it. if you make the minimum payment you will never ever own it. at lowes the riding mowers are like own for 28.00 a month and if you calculate it out . you will be financing it for 12 yrs at the payment and you will give them back almost 3 times what it cost. be careful when you buy.
