Another shop project

Acting on a suggestion from the Welcome Page, I'm starting my finishing project thread here.

The shop is 1500 sq ft. unfinished, but heated and cooled. Heat with a wood boiler with gas pack back-up. Wired for lights, but needs completing.

Roughed in the building in 1997 but never finished due to the fact I didn't know what I wanted most in the space. Wood working or automotive, sawdust and grease don't agree with each other in IMO, so I've leaned to the automotive side primarily. I build a few engines a year and do some welding/fabrication along the way.

I have extreme PACK RAT tendencies, to which I am addressing. Love a deal and feel a duty to rescue junk and cast-off. I have learned that even good junk requires time to rescue and there is only so much time. When I began the purge it suddenly became evident for every thing I released, I "earned" that time required I would have spent saving the POS.

There was minimal separation anxiety which was an unexpected advantage.

Had an issue with what to do with tools and **** during this project. Got a Conex container to set-up as a tool crib. Painted, wired, fabricated shelving and loaded with tools, hardware and parts/engines/trans/ ect.

All the pics are since last October, some last night. I think there are some more that can be posted.

As for the 57, the story goes like this:

My Mom and Dad were married in 1956. Mamma's folks were Chevrolet people and Daddy's were Ford people. They had had three cars, a 46, 49 and 50 Fords. Mama says they never knew which one would crank to drive to work in the morning. After about three years, Mama had him convinced to sell the Fords and buy one good Chevrolet. Daddy found and bought a 57 Belair sedan... 283/270 hp, three speed with 4:11 posi. He has always said it would "jump a 6 oz Coke bottle". We had this 57 for all my childhood, when it started to burn a little oil Dad bought another Chevrolet, then another then another...... The man that bought the old 57 worked with Daddy, he came one evening and we had to push start the thing to crank it, battery dead, smoking it went down the drive way. I started to cry and Daddy asked why was I slinging snot. "I wanted THAT car when I got my drivers license". I was maybe 10 at the time, too far from 16 for either one of us to be thinking about my first car. Dad told me we would find me a 57 Chevrolet before I got my drivers. Well, over the years I developed the ability to smell and hear 57 Chevies. I can still do that, if one is buried in ten feet of manure, I can hear it call my name. My wife will testify to this. Anyway, now I'm 15 and have saved 500.00 so we went for a Sunday 57 hunt. After riding all day we turn for the house and there sits a 57 Chevrolet Convertible in a back yard. I didn't **** then, that comes later. So, we make our approach, strike a deal and buy the car....... for 500 dollars. Drove the car through High School and beyond. It's been waiting for me to initiate a restoration and sometimes I have a pain when looking at it sitting there knowing I should be working on it. Daddy will be 79 this year and he doesn't let me forget that if it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have a 57 Chevy to love........ and he wants to ride, too.

While I'm here, here's a more recent story.

Bought this to re-sell, but got attached and did a frame-off. Did everything but the paint here in the shop(s) as I have two shop buildings. One is really old and will come down some day.

Found some other images. These are from January of this year, some insulation up.

A little less clutter, but it's clear I'm not done yet.

The air handler and coil that was installed about seven years ago in the attic decided to freeze and rupture this year. Found a replacement on Ebay, installed it in the gas pack duct DOWN STAIRS this time. Works better than I deserve now.

The shop faces due South, never gets below 40 degrees with large south facing windows. The boiler will heat the space up to 65 in about 20 minutes.

There's a pic of the Habitat cabinets for the wifes work room and some of the T8 fixtures, Habitat also. Grabbed 11 new fixtures for 225.00.

Other pic is a shot from the back room into the main body of the shop.

This is an item pretty much untapped around here . I picked up one last year after a house fire ( was cheaper in the end than renting a POD ) . I dont know why more people dont get them . Mine is 28' long 8' wide and 9' tall and will eventually be placed where my crappy little 10X12 junk metal shed is located.

POD's were high as Camel Cooder. The man rented and sold, I bought straight-out, outside painted and delivered for 2800.00. 40x8 with vents. Had to do some creative placement as the grade on the lot required it.

You got the "High Cube" with the 9' ceiling. I didn't know they existed until after the fact. Wished I had known about those, but I can still pack more **** in the 8 foot high than I need.

I just noticed it's been two years since the purge began. While things are still in disarray, it's all related to forward motion rather than stagnation and storage. The major obstacle now is funding has slowed.

Here's what we have been doing to the wifes sewing room, the past couple of months. I insulated the four walls for climate control and sound control. Wired, installed occupancy sensors for lighting, R&R the original fixtures with T-8's we picked up at the ReStore. (That was a good move!) I put receptacles about every four feet, just because.

I have laminate flooring to go down after I address some issues with the slab. There are a couple of low places that need attention.

The cabinets are ReStore items, counter tops are coming as I just found what I want to do with those. The lower cabinets on the one wall will have the fireplace built in and the top will run full length.

The fireplace, by the way, was a CL deal. Found two new ones with mantles for about a third of a new one. With this room facing South and a large window, French door and insulated, this room maintains 57-60 degrees during a sunny day with outside temps around 30 degrees.(today) The heater on the fireplace bumps it to 70-72 easily.

I think she has decided on her paint colors. We'll probably start on that as soon as I can finish sanding the walls. Most of the screw holes have been filled and other flaws attended.

Thanks Zach. Your build was inspiring for me as you are so creative and have an exceptional eye for cool.

I have started building out cabinets based on ReStore cabinet carcasses. I added casters to make them mobile so they can be rolled together to make a larger work surface and ease cleaning. The next step is to make the most of the cabinets by adding drawers. I purchased the hardware for this recently.

The soffit storage and down lighting is well on the way. I had the sub panel in place for a year before I could pull the service cable. When the shop was built, I had put 4 inch pipe under the slab, so it was a matter of snaking the cable and making the circuit runs as needed.

The cable was a dumpster recovery. I found enough #3 copper in full lengths to make the run, but I was a little nervous it would come up short. Of course, I found this cable before scrap metals became so popular.

I located T-8 ballasts on Ebay and converted the 96" T-12 fixtures to T-8's. Cost on those ballasts and bulbs was around 14.00 each unit and WOW what a difference. Some of the best money I ever spent.

Jim, Those doors came out of our Church during a remodel, but I can imagine this style was used in in factories, hospitals and the like. The hardware is heavy red brass and very sturdy.

More importantly, you are correct about who's' office this is.

Well, since I'm here....... No pictures today, but I had a good conversation with a flooring guy last night. He's been in the business all his life so I attempted to pick his brain. There are some minor issues with the slab, low spots that need leveling before I can go further with the laminate floor. Walter stopped by to take a look and gave me a ton of advice based on his years of experience. I learned more in 30 minutes with him than I have while researching the options for self-leveling products. At least I'm a lot more comfortable with the process of leveling and installing the laminate. The first time doing new things I have questions, but he pretty much talked me through the process in a way that I felt as if I had done this before.

Will get the materials in a week or so and get to work.

Yes sir, that was the car's original color, it's pretty much original throughout, with a little engine/exhaust upgrade(s).

House remodel, that's funny. Actually, this particular room is supposed to be finished similar to one in the house.

I don't know that I can meet the deadline to redo the gas by this Summer, but maybe this year? I have a couple of other pieces to do as well.

Got this a few years ago. Many a collector had courted this meter, but some how I asked the right question at the right time.

Don't have a picture right now that I know of, but there's a Bubble Balancer and a set of 4 bubble gum machines on a single stand. The gum ball machine came from a business that my folks ran, so it's got a certain connection for me.

I'll see if I can get some pics of the goodies before they get restored.

Well, I have to admit that I went through the same battle deciding how to handle the restore or not restore question. I decided to restore since everything else will be restored.

So, the meter is an old timer from our town, can't see it but it's on the right next to the old fire house under the 5th from right arched window @ 5:46.

Now, I'm probably going to regret starting the resto on the meter, but I still love it!
