After being in our home for 3 years now, I decided it's finally time to get my garage sorted out. It's a small 10x24 one car (with a low ceiling of I believe 7.5 feet maybe, if that), and as much as I didn't want to buy a house with a single car garage, the market was kind of dry when we were house hunting and we got a good deal on this place, and it has a decent yard, so I sacrificed the one thing I really wanted to get in to our first house. It's built right in to the land, and I don't think I have enough room to really expand and if I did it'd be a **** ton of money anyways, so for the next few years at the least I've gotta make the best out of what I have. So, here's the start!

Last night my father in law and I hung 3 shop lights, 2 parallel with the garage and one in the back perpendicular. Before them, the only lights were a twin bulb fluorescent light in the back left, and an incandescent light on the ceiling. They just weren't cutting it lol. So after those were hung and nightfall came along, I snapped the first pic of the garage since we moved in, which is below. The rider typically is in a shed in our back yard, but the deck engagement cable busted so it's in the garage until I get the new cable in from Troy Bilt. The ac units are only in there until tomorrow as well. The push mower is in there during the summer but will also go in the shed during the winter, since I park my car in the garage during the winters. Other than that, what you see is what you get! It's nothing too fantastical or interesting, but I'm a forum ***** so I figured why not share what I've got lol  And it's a work in progress, so I hope to document some semi-frequent updates.

In the back there was a full span of floor cabinets, but I took the doors out and removed the inside shelving from the right side so I could fit my winter wheels and tires, which are behind a Bolens rider you can see behind the Troy Bilt (Bolens will be going away soon hopefully), and then I brought my toolbox up from the basement and put it under the left side shelf which you can just barely see in the back. Hopefully next year I'll be able to rip out all of that old cabinetry and install some newer shelving, and maybe a nice storage chest too, we'll see. Believe it or not, my car fits nicely in here once it's a little more cleaned out

Next step is a GarageDeck floor that will be installed tomorrow night after work. I can't freakin wait to get that down! And then next spring I'll be doing paint on the walls, will most likely go with a grey color on the brick that's currently green, a blue stripe in the middle with a black pinstripe surrounding it, and then white upper walls.

Pic from last night after I was done, consider this the "before" picture ;)

And here's the floor design I did on bigfloors.com, the tiles will be arriving tomorrow, so stoked for it!

1-car garage or 10-car garage doesn't matter on here:) I think we all appreciate the creativity, dedication and hard work that comes from anywhere! Congrats on your place and looking forward to seeing the floor in there!

ps- take LOTS of pictures:D

The only differance between a large single car garage and a small 2 car garage is having to be more creative with storage . My 2 car will never have more than one car in it at a time .

Awesome start Richb82, can't wait to see how it progresses. That's one of the other things I love about this forum. I find myself nearly as excited as the garage's owner for the next step. :lol_hitti

You are far ahead of me though, you own! I'm just a meager renter. :dunno: You lucky dog!

I am old enough to remember when almost every house only had a one car garage and it was usually 12X20 feet in size. My first home had that. One night I jacked up my 64 chevy and the jack slipped over and the car busted the sheetrock!!! I love one car garages as they make wonderful shops if you don't have to park in them. If attached, you can add a family room out of them. I hear laughing? Well in todays McMansions and bonus rooms I guess you could laugh at that idea. In fact in my current home bought in 1971, I converted the carport into a family room and it looks like it was built that way. It is all in the way you sew it all up outside. I built then my detached 24X32 garage shop in the back. Love one car garages!!

New floor is in! So easy to do and I think it looks great, just need to trim the left row to fit, the garage floor itself is about 3/4" too narrow. And I gotta do under the wall shelf at the front. I'll work on getting that done in a few weeks. Here are the pics :)

Thanks Rick, now I just gotta work on cleaning the freakin place out lol. Gotta get that rider out of there and a few other things, just losing out of room because we're currently working on the basement as well so a few things that I would usually put down there are taking up space in the garage :-( We'll have it all sorted out in a few weeks though. I wish I could get around to doing the paint this year, but since we're going to be doing our bathroom next month and the garage walls need some love, I gotta hold off until next spring. It's so much better now than where it was before though that's for sure!

Nice start! Looking forward to progress. The repainted walls will look great with the floor.

I assume you're keeping the windows. I'm curious how you'll work them into your build. My garage is only slightly larger than yours and has one window in the middle of the wall sections. I'm torn about keeping them, moving them, etc. I like natural light, but their placement is a challenge with regards to cabinets, workbench, etc.

I love having the windows for the light and the airflow. When we were doing the overhead lights Saturday, there was a real nice breeze coming in the back window keeping us cool. They're old push-out style windows where the bottom pushes out, so even in the hardest of rain I can keep them open. In fact, they haven't been closed since early summer lol. So I'll definitely be keeping them, and just work around the space they take up. As soon as I can get the back of the garage more organized (read: get rid of more ****) it will be much easier to imagine what I eventually want to do, and with what kind of materials. I do know I'd looove to do one of those big standup cabinets like Lowes sells in the very back right corner, opposite side of the window. Then take down the shelf there in the front left. I'd like to eventually make that entire back part a workspace area and free up the sides for hanging shovels, the ladder, etc., and maybe hang some short cabinets from the ceiling.

So many ideas, so little money lol. Oh well, all in due time eh?

Acquired this old school signal light from my dad last night. It was his brother Jims who found it and kept it back in the 70's, he passed away in '96, but he's had it I believe ever since Jim moved down to FL back in the late 80's. I was over at my parents house last night, saw it, and asked if I could have it. Pops said sure take it, so my project over the fall will be to restore it back to original condition. It's in pretty good shape, just needs to be repainted and rewired, as I'd like to try and find a way to make the lights blink in sequence, as right now they all just flash randomly. I have a buddy who has a sand blaster so I think I'm going to take it over to his shop and blast it clean, then start repainting it and what not. Should be a fun little project, and it has some emotional value, so I'll be happy when it's all done :)

Lots of folks here have mastered the art of maximizing space....the keys are in multi-use tools, putting things on wheels, folding things out of the way, lifting things out of the way, etc.

There's more than a few folks here who have two-car garages with one car kept in them....which effectively leaves them a single-car space for their shop. This is your scenario. You're on track getting rid of the rider. There's soooo many space-saving ideas you can build yourself for not too much coin
