Thanks SOOO much for all the compliments! My wife thinks I am insane and is divorcing me (SERIOUSLY) because I dont have a "Normal" job...although I do many other things as well... but I digress.
The paint is just RustOleum Enamal and Duplicoilor Engine Enamal. Both are excellent paints...but I will be moving to a gun setup soon. How much cleanup is involved and how tough is the learning curve?
The Craftsman was done in RUSTOLEUM HAMMERED COPPER. EXPENSIVE PAINT!
Because I buy a LOT of paint the local stores give me a break... usually pay between 4-5 bux per can... but I know a GUN would be cheaper.
GOTTA get on the HLVP Train!

everybody needs a spouse that doesn't understand your hobby or passions...... said no one ever.

been there, just do what makes you happy, and you'll be happy...

also, hvlp guns are cheap and effective these days. i had bought a 3 gun set for 90 bucks a while back, it was a decent re-brand and i know the same type of stuff can be had with a little bit of looking. the bonus is you can get a more durable finish on your product, AND it will take less paint and 1/4 of the time to paint as well.

hurry up and do that research

My finger hurts thinking about $130 in rattle cans

Nice job

My thoughts exactly! After a couple of restorations a guy can afford a compressor and paint gun. :)

I would say the learning curve is fairly easy compared to the job you did with rattle cans. Clean up is very important though, your gun's performance depends on it. The end product will be better and longer lasting though.

Great restorations Creekhed! Thanks for sharing.

I feel you man, I drove my ex crazy not having a "normal" job too. I didn't have a "normal" job for 15 yrs before we met, why she want to try and change me:dunno:

I use the rustoleum but in quarts or gallons, depending the job(color) size and the HF hvlp that goes on sale for $9.99 all the time. The first thing is setting the gun each time, takes seconds but you gotta do it every time you start a new job. Make sure to use a test panel of the same material, ie don't test on wood if your project is metal. You want to be able to check how wide/narrow the pattern is and adjust to your project. When spraying inside corners, you want a smaller rounder pattern and when spraying large flat panels, you want a taller skinny pattern. Keep a consistent distance just like rattle cans. The learning curve is short, main thing is like mentioned, clean the gun real good when finished. Also, make sure you have a clean dry air supply, I use a water separator at the compressor along with a disposable moisture filter at the gun(new one each project).

One of my friends used an airless sprayer to paint all his cabinets with good results, that may be an option for you as well. Either way, you should be able to find someone that would trade a compressor or airless sprayer for one of your finished projects, you do great work!

NIce job on the boxes. I am working on a late 40s vintage Montgomery Ward top and bottom combo made by Huot. They are nearly identical to the 40s Craftsman set you restored, except the drawer pulls are wider on the Wards boxes. I picked up the bottom box in CA and the top in MN. I will post some pics when I am done.

Very, very nice work!! You should be very proud of the end results.

So, what type of equipment do you have for the restoration work? Do you do any sandblast prep? Do you have a sheet metal break / shear / rolls? What do you do for the welding, if needed?

While I admire your hard work in restoring these boxes, I think it crappy to try to sell them for something they are not, $975 for some repainted Husky boxes.
http://rochester.craigslist.org/tls/3715548119.html

I have these boxes, and AFAIK, they are the same thing. Both Made In Canada in the same factory.

So, unless warranty came into play, I don't see how there could be a problem.

Am I missing something else, b/c that is a Mac box, that was relabeled Husky.I could understand if it was a cheapie C-Man with friction slides that someone was trying to scam as a Mac or SO, but this really is the same.

Just my two pennies.

I will agree, plus the box is worth the money whatever name is on it, new slides, new paint and a lot of work!

So I surf these pages often...but 1st post...

I restore boxes...

My latest is this...
A 90's Husky AKA MAC Economizer. After doing some research I found out that this Husky box is ALSO a MAC Economizer...so NATURALLY I re badged it into a MAC Economizer:thumbup:

Before:
Chests were BEAT! :lol_hittimany of tyhe spot welds were broken and the result was bent steel. I had to weld many many of the drawers, and re-face a bunch as well. Took an old water heater and used the steel face....cut a bunch off and used to to reface the drawers.

After:

IMG_2262.jpg

It took almost $130 of Rattle Cans at $5/can!!!
I used Duplicolor Grabber Green Engine Enamal. I like the stuff! I also like Chevy Orange!
Anyway, I think it came out good! NOT Perfect... but VERY NICE!
btw I bought the thing off CL for $80!...the paint cost more than the Boxes!
I bought the MAC decal via the bay and pinstriped it myself.
Also, the bearing slides were pretty beat so I called the home depot number on the side of one of the drawers and after a little talking had them send me ALL NEW SLIDES!!!!! WOW!!!! That must be about $300!!!
Anyway, I hope ya like it :p
There Ya Have It!

Creekhed, do you have that Mac box on NY Craigslist ???

I have a hard time believing that just because both boxes come from the same factory they are the same spec and design. If that were true nobody would buy mac boxes. The point I'm trying to get across is put yourself in the position of the buyer. I just spent $975 for a Husky box filled with bondo and spray paint. I'm pretty sure that box brand new from husky would be the same prince if not less.

A little internet research found the Husky boxes were the same as MAC in the PAST! New stuff in store is not! I don't know what the price was on the good Husky boxes was new but one poster said it was $700 LESS than the comparable MAC. A Craftsman Griplatch box and a Waterloo Posi Latch box are the same but the Craftsman is a lot cheaper.

In the 90's Home Depot was selling Husky Boxes that were made in Canada by a manufacturer that was also selling the IDENTICAL box to MAC,..,..which they sold as the MAC Economizer. So, that box IS IN FACT a MAC ECONOMIZER.

Believe it! It is the EXACT same box....some went to Home Depot and were branded Husky, while others went to MAC. Same specs. same Sheet Metal, SAME BOXES.

You won't find this to be the case nowadays.

I did my research before selling this as a MAC.... because IT IS A MAC...PERIOD

Really beautiful work, and just my two cents, but I think your pricing is very fair. Where do you find all of your project? I've had no luck with Craigslist, so,if you have some great source or search ideas please share.
