Hi guys, I am posting a few pics of my latest trailer build. This one I am towing with my car so its not as heavy as the ones I usually build. I fabricated my own fenders this time, They're pretty robust. 3/16" x 2" x 2". Its a 4'x8' when completed. I am using a set of rims of my 65 mustang. I haven't started on the main frame but the sides and tailgate are done. I am nesting 1/2" plywood in the sides and floor.

More pics to follow. Cheers,

Re: another utility traier build

I pull a 4 By 8 behind my Mercury Mariner. Mine is a modified Tractor Supply with wood sides and a plywood floor.
Just the right size for most jobs.

Holy **** bud, that's some serious effort for the trailing edge of the fender. With all the killer equipment you have I'm surprised you don't have any ordinary cutting tools :)

Thank you. All I have is a band saw. I machine the pieces after to get them square. I will post a few more pics as it progresses. Cheers

I'm in for the long haul on this build. That thing ought to last a hundred years, it's so heavy duty.

Heres a few more pics. Turns out the tires were making contact with the suspension hardware. Added these spacers.

How much were the spacers?

Every time I ran into this problem, it was just cheaper and quicker to stretch the axle and re position the spring seats.

JJ: looks great. I have to ask what the cross bar across the top is for. are you planning on making a top or second tier for your little trailer or do tell?

did you ever get that huge lathe up and running and how do you like it? i'm guessing you made that spacer?

Thank you. I had to roll it out of my shop on furniture casters on its side to get it through the door like a Trojan horse lol

Hi, It was just there to keep it rigid as I had to tilt it on its side and roll it out of my door. The big lathe is still waiting to get hooked up as I have been working on the ceiling ( insulation, lighting and so on ). Thanks for asking. More pics of the shop to follow, Cheers

JJ: i'm guessing another project was in the way or maybe since you don't have wheels on it that it might be heading out onto another person's truck and heading to the paint shop? nicely done and always a pleasure checking in and seeing what you've been making or working on.

pictures of the lathe anytime you get time to work on will be just fine and probably a machine worth it's own thread. some day i'd like to learn how to use a lathe even if it's just a little one for making a NONOBTANIUM PART or PIECE to something I need it for. like a vise nut or something to repair a 100+ year old vise for instance.

take care

Thanks so much, always a pleasure. I built in in my small shop at work ( which is actually an office with a machine shop in it ).

Im a lab instructor at a university as my full time job but Im a tool and die maker by trade.

Im not sure if there a trade school close to you but a night school course might be a great way to get started.

I really enjoy building things ( metal mostly ). I use solidworks to get a basic idea and go from there, good luck !

Put some primer on the frame over the weekend. I used a 2" brush and a 3" roller and tray. Picked the front end up with my chain fall. I used a spot light to ensure I could get into the shadows and not miss any spots. I think I got more paint on me and the floor than I did on the frame.

Next weekend Im heading to Home Depot to get some plywood for the floor and sides. I think I will put some Thompsons Water Seal on it.

I am using all stainless hardware so hopefully it will last a while.

I usually make my trailers all steel but this ones really robust but light also.

More pictures to follow. :)

JJ: looks great. just curious if marine plywood is an option to buy and use or is it not available or TOO spendy in your area? I just picked up some 2x4 white oak and wish you lived closer so you could build me a similar trailer so I could use my oak for the floor.

just curious if you were to make one like this to sell to a client or GJ member what would the price be? or would you be willing to make one?

keep posting up the great pictures as you have time.

thanks

Heres a few more pics. As I welded the frame together I fed wire through the tubes to aid pulling the electrical wires through the frame.

It keeps your wiring safe from the elements. I added a marker light to the front so I can see if my lights are on from the rear view mirror.

I made a raceway for the wires to feed the tail light. Its held on by the bolts that secure the lights to the fenders.

Still have to add the plywood sides and floor.

It has kind of an old school look to it which is what I was going for. Like something your dad or grandfather would have built.

I hope this will last and go to my son.

Hi, sorry for the slow reply, I am thinking plywood for now. Maybe hit it with some Thompsons water seal.

I think I have more invested than it would cost to buy one from Lowes or one of those types of stores but theres no real challenge in that.

I would be delighted to build one for anyone who wished ,

Have you considered expanded metal under the plywood. Ply doesn't do,well in the weather, and expanded metal under it would prevent something breaking through the ply in the future

JJ: yes the trailer looks great so far. have you consider diamond plate steel for the bed and sides or is that too spendy in Canada? how much would diamond plate cost for the floor and the sides?

keep up the great work and i'm sure your son will love it of course after you make sure to TEST it a few hundred times.

cheers

Just put the finishing touches on this trailer. Added some gussets on the sides at the back to add some additional support.

Thank you so much, got busy on another build I submitted recently ( stereo build ).

Hi, lumbers pretty cheap here, Diamond sheet in aluminum might be nice, now that you mention it. Not sure on the cost though.....

I hope this trailer holds up as well, Its actually light enough to move by hand.

Cheers

Quality built trailer! But why are the taillights pointed towards the sky?

Excellent question. When I started to drill the holes, that's where they ended up but there's actually a raceway for the wires on the other side of the fenders to keep the electrical dry. Im kinda stuck with them there now...
