Another vise question ?

Here's a vise I got from my grandfather about 35 years ago. I havent used it in 20 years. It says "C.B. & F. Co." No 40 on one side, Lancaster Pa on the other. Does anyone have a clue how old it is? Also, its kinda rusty, but still works. What's the best way to get rid of the rust and get it back in working condition?

I think you had better get some of those rubber washers for the handle before you do anything else!

Yea - but I dont know whether to use o rings or the hose washers

take it apart & remove the screw ... throw it (the screw) in the parts washer... and then throw the rest in the sand blaster ... grease up the screw ... paint the castings ... reassemble ... use it and enjoy the memories of your grandfather.

Seriously, I would just do what the OP said. Take it apart, parts washer, Blast the body, good coat of paint and grease on the moving parts and mount that baby up.

I'm in compete agreement with the others on how to clean it up -- with one exception! Have your children or grandchildren help you with the rebuilding. WHY? In fifty years, when they inherit the tool, they will have fond memories of the vise and you.

I think your vise was made by the Champion Blower and Forge Co.. I have an old hand crank operated drill press (post drill) similar to the attached photo from this maker also marked Lancaster PA. I hope this helps your research. Enjoy your great old vise.

Thanks - I googled CB&F Co and all I got were some ebay search pages that didnt give me any info.

Heck, I should have known that, I have one of their old blowers out in my shop!
