You know, I never even gave vises a thought till I bought one last week and then joined THIS place. :willy_nil Now look at me. :tard:

I was gonna pay 65 for it, but I didn't notice the nick on the back corner till I saw it in person. I almost walked away, but paid 60 for it instead. Too much I assume? That's OK...I already got my eye on another. :eyecrazy:

The red stuff on the jaw is just paint. The casting seems kind of rough on it, but I don't really know if that's normal or not... I've got a lot to learn...Here's the pics... I'm gonna post this and my Parker side by side when I get them cleaned up.

For that vise, $60 is a good deal. I have one exactly like it, and paid considerably more. Athol is probably one of, if not the stoutest vise for the money. My favorite brand, by far.

Great score.

60 is a good price. Many have paid more. The casting on the Athols are a little rough so that is normal. Look up Athol patents and you can see a lot of things that became standard on vises like swivel bases were Athol/Starrett innovations.

Nice. That chip won't have any impact on the function of that vise, I believe. To each his own style, but I like leaving some of the little nicks and battle scars. These wonderful old vises have great stories, if they could only tell them to us!

Totally worth $60. I've been trying to get that same one from a local, but they think they "might need it".

Those appear to be "Hot forged Jaws". I have some vises like that, and if the cross-hatch is messed up, it is rewarding to sit there with the radio on, your favorite beverage, and a diamond file and redo the cross hatch. Every time I look at mine I think, "Hell Yea!-that came out bitchin!"

It's a keeper. Good luck!

FWIW, my similar Athol seems always to have been smooth jaws.
