I have been in need of a larger welding/fixturing table so when I found this in a semi local online auction I knew I had to go for it.

Precision Steel Tooling Plate, Drilled & Tapped Face 62" x 31" x 2"

I am going to have to shell out for the legs and supports and that's why I'm here (okay the top is cool as hell).

What would you build the under structure out of, I am planning on doing the hydro jack down wheels since I don't have a pallet jack to move it if need be

I did the maths and the top should weigh right around 1100 pounds, so at least my engine hoist can lift it onto the legs when I get that far.

A few more pics...

I would build your substructure out of 2-1/2" square tube, 3/16" wall. That way you can incorporate hitch style tooling.

I built mine the way I did because I thought it was the best design I could come up with. I see no issues scaling it down. Obviously if you don't use the hitch thing you wouldn't benefit from that.

I plan on having at least 1 receiver on each side of the table, I want to keep the top clear of vises etc...

Nice find. That is quite the table top.

Lookin forward to the end result.

Me too, should be able to tackle it in a few weeks, have to get some outdoor **** done as well as a few things inside the shop, of course I will also need to get some supplies.

 my son just said "Hey you need a table to build your table on"

I guess that I will have to get these old bones down on the floor and build the base on the new top.

Playing with ideas in sketchup now, have to stop by the steel yard tomorrow and if they have what I need I just might get it.

That is awesome. What a score. Out of curiosity, what did you pay for that bad boy? If you don't mind sharing...

Whatever frame you do, bolt the top to it. I would probably do 2.5+ just to make everything look proportional.

Don't mind at all $461+ 15%+tax so a tad over 5 bills or less than $.50 a pound.

I have been designing the frame and will wait until I have the top in my shop before finalizing but I was planning to follow dr_clyde's suggestion and go with 2 1/2 square tube with a 3/16 wall.

2 inch over hang on all sides with recievers for accessories at least 1 on each side. 2 lower shelves and the retractable castors for moving it around the shop.

Lowest shelf has to be at least 5 inches to the floor so I can get a broom under it to retrieve all the fasteners I tend to drop.

I want to wait to start on the base so that I can set up tabs to hit the existing threaded holes for mounting.

Damn, that's a steal. I'd pay that no problem...interested to see it done. You can see how I did the frame on my old table in my sig. It would have looked rad sitting under that top.

Haha, well you have plenty of time to get your design all figured out and maybe grab some material. I'm with you, dr_clyde's design is pretty nice. I may have to go with that for my table.

WOW, that is a steel, hah. I'd be pretty excited to get that for that price.

Great table to bad you didn't have the room for it, you are correct that base would have been perfect under my top.

When are you going to get going on the new one, looking forward to it.

design is all done and when I'm at the steel yard tomorrow I will either get the 2 1/2 square tube or order it.

Well according to my drawing and math I will need 2 sticks of 2 1/2 sq tube to make the base, 4 5 inch castors, 2 jacks,

I will have to dig through the scrap/drop pile and see what I can come up with for the round bar.

I have quite a bit of expanded for the shelves, I like the expanded for the shelves since dust, dirt and other **** falls through to the flood and you can just sweep it up.

I have the three SS cash drawers that I got with the top for the new Steevo style bench that I will mount under the top for clean storage, measuring/layout tools, bolts for fixtures etc....

The next question I have to decide is if I should make the leveling feet or buy them?

If I had a mill or lathe it would be a no brainer but I don't.
I'm thinking that I do have a drawer full of 3/4 inch bolts, if I add a 2 inch pad to the head they would make great feet, the area where the bench will sit 99% of the time is very close to level so I won't need much adjustment.

I have a week or two to think about this stuff so any input would be great.

That's one hell of a table top. Hope you don't have any moves coming up! lol. What do you plan to build on it?

No moves ever, my shop is at our lake place and a few years back we put the property in trust with enough cash investment to cover the taxes forever. My grandkids, grandkids will be using this table.

As far as what I will build on it I don't have anything specific planned but it will sure come in handy.

Pads for your leveling feet here. I used them and am happy with the quality.
http://www.jwwinco.com/products/section7/

I decided that I will make my own feet 3/4-10 bolts with 2.5 x 3/8ths inch pads should be more then enough, my floor is very close to level in the location where this will spend 99% of its time. But thanks for the link.

I ordered the steel for the base today, pick up tomorrow.

2 1/2 inch 3/16ths wall and 2" 1/8th wall and some 1 1/4 inch cold rolled round.

That top is freaking heavy, i'm hoping that one engine hoist will lift it, I do have another if needed.

The holes are tapped 5/8-11 so I need to order some lifting rings.

Well I would like to say that it is done but I ran into a small issue, The holes are not tapped all the way through and my 5/8-11 tap is **** so I need to get a new one so I can bolt the beast down, I also need to pick up some plywood for the shelf, other than that it is done and I already used it to work on the top for the Steevo style tool box work bench which also is just about done I need plywood for that too and a bit of welding on the end caps.

Cutting the feet for the levelers

Tabs for attaching the top 3/8ths plate.

Top frame layed out.

finish welding the top frame

Laying out and tacking the legs

Attaching the legs.

Drawer boxes mounted.

drawers in place.

One drawer filled, this one will hold bolts for hold downs.

Wheels and jacks installed.

Some how the pics of lifting the top with the engine hoist and it in place dissapered but you get the idea.

It took awhile to find this one, not perfect but close enough, so far the biggest issue is that the holes are not through tapped so I need to either pick up some shorter (1 and or 1 1/2 inch) bolts or tap the holes the rest of the way. The 4 that I have tapped went well with the new tap I had to get but there are a lot of holes.

Don't forget to add angle brackets to your base plates to stop t he plates from bending.
