Years ago Elroy always had one of these at an arms length away. They don't use these with AutoCad. So what is it??

I assume it has to do with drafting? I took manual drafting in High School but I sure don't remember that.

Basically it is an alignment tool, we have used it forever to adjust the scales to ensure they are at 90 degrees and set properly. The flat end is used like a screwdriver.

That should satisy Alex, after all, he is Canadian

I never watch that show but I have several of them in my desk even though we have very few drafting tables left!

What is a screwdriver?

You can adjust the band tension (with the pin part) as well the scales. I believe it is called a "scale wrench"

I guess removing the scales may be the prime use. Perhaps that is what Elroy is waiting for.

We still teach basic manual drafting to ensure CAD students understand layout - They all get exposed to the key!

GOOD.

Just about every whizz kid AutoCad designer Elroy has ever had the displeasure of dealing with has no idea how views are generated. They all think the "computer" will do the work for them. It has literally been years sense Elroy has seen a proper section view correctly oriented on a drawing. And these new PRO-E designers are the worst. They typically design parts that can't be economically built. **** like square holes that don't need to be square. It's a joke and Elroy encourages you to "learn them right"

I have been teaching AutoCAD and the various add-ons for 20 years now at the college level and one thing is sure - you can easily teach a design draftsperson to use CAD properly but it is next to impossible to teach a CAD person how to draft and design properly unless they have been taught some of the basics. We have had great success in our program by ensuring that our grads have the fundamentals!! Cheers!!
