Found this K-D set of ??? ?? at the local Re-Store today. Have no idea what it is or what it does but for a buck I couldn't turn it down.

Somehow I got this in the wrong forum. Is anyone capable of moving this to general tools?

I can't, but I can tell you it's an ignition point alignment tool

Interesting. Looking at it with that in mind, it makes sense. I haven't ever seen this particular specialist tool (or toolset). And yes, I've had cars with points. A good, obscure find.

Funny, Ive had many points cars and cant for the life of me see how that tool would help, You basically need a flat head screw driver and a buisness card or .20 feeler gauge.

As opposed to the new ones?

Note: I don't think I've ever seen an engine with points, let alone worked on one
Old as in 20's and 30's before "unitized" point sets came out in the 40's.
There were still a lot of points around when I started in the 70's when new cars had that "transistorized stuff..."
Believe it or not guys back then wanted to yank the electronic distros out and replace them with a used point set up....
Even equipment with magnetos have points in them.

The Googlewebs says that GM used HEI from 75 to mid 80s . Before that it was points type distributor.
I remember we had a 68 Catalina and dad had a 69 Chevy pickup. I can remember him setting the points on the pickup until 78 when he bought a new K5 Blazer.
I was about 12 and vaguely remember him doing it.
You probably have worked on those older vehicles but people had threw in an HEI distributor before you saw it.
My old 67 chevelle had points but I went back with a Mallory electronic ignition. Same with my inherited 73 Corvette. Dad swapped in an electronic distributor.
