Inside telescoping gauges. The spinning ends should be locks.

You put the telescoping ends inside of any measurable object and once you have the ends in the most precise location for an accurate reading of the inside diameter(i.e. used for main bearing bore for an engine), you twist the end which locks the telescoping ends.

You then remove the tool and use another tool, typically a micrometer to measure the locked down telescoping ends, and you have a relatively accurate measurement of the inside diameter.

You will get a more accurate reading if you put the tool in the bore, tighten the lock just snug enough to hold and then rock it over center. Lock it tightly before measuring it.

I disagree with your explanation of how to use the tool. The vid is ok and another in depth vid is;

The tools the OP is showing may be beyond use. These rely on smooth sliding action and with pitting and probably a rough keyway they are not going to be repeatable.

Lufkin was a great brand. Sad to see them neglected. Often the measuring tips were plated, and if they are still clean and shiny, it may be worth the effort to clean and polish the working surfaces. For appearance, if not for use.

When using these for critical measurements, take several readings and see where the results cluster, rather than an average. Reject the outliers.

We have a set very similar to those on the farm and use them from time to time to do exactly what is described above. If we have an old piece of equipment with poor parts manuals and we need to know what bearing goes in what carrier etc we'll use these. Don't use them often but they're invaluable when we do !!

That maroon leatherette case is classic Lufkin. I found a Lufkin 7C radius gage set last year in the same kind of case. Link here.
