Obviously some kind of grinder. But for what? A DC motor with speed controller, including reverse.

I like the TO-3 heatsink as a switch guard. I'll probably steal that idea for future use!

I thought that was pretty cool idea too.

Thanks for all the replies, guys. I had a closer look at it yesterday and brought it home. There is a provision for a 5C collet I didn't see on first look. That and the passel of 5C collets around it should have clued me in. I spent about an hour this evening trying to figure out how to make it work. And even more difficult is finding a place to put it.

We want to know what you paid for it now!

Sorry, $0. My mother just wants as much as possible out of her house.

This was made by my father. He passed away 3 years ago. I wasn't really into machining, but a friend asked me to custom make a couple of shoulder bolts and a spacer. So I grabbed his mini lathe that's been sitting doing nothing and made them. The first attempt took 5 hours and I ended up tossing it out. But I made a lot of metal chips. The 2nd and 3rd ones took an hour total. So now I'm dulling bits and thinking about sharpening them. But I think this is designed to do endmill bits, not lathe bits.

If you're desperate for a place to put it, I'm sure I could find room at my place. :D

If you only knew the "stuff" that's in that basement that nobody's using. I'm the only one who even knows what most of it is, let alone how to use it. One of his "things" was slowing down drill presses. Kind of like lots of folks on GJ.

You could sharpen lathe bits with it as well. That's likely what the square collets are for.

That's what I thought, but I must be missing something. I put a lathe bit in one of the square collets, but was unable to make the bit touch the grinding wheel. I need to spend some time with it, but the In-laws are here until Saturday. I have 4 other grinding wheels too.

Pretty sure there were plans to build that in either "Home Shop Machinist" or "Projects in Metal" magazine years ago. Looks well made.
