Seen an auction coming up that has a decent looking 2 post lift up for grabs. The lift in question is a Challenger 39000.

Tried searching to see what a price range might be but found nothing specific to this lift even though I am guessing a 9000# 2 post lift regardless of brand will probably bring about the same ball park but thought I would see if anyone had some input of a range I might expect to be looking at? My guess is around $1,000 give or take but of course I can hope for cheaper.

I usually look at what a new item would cost and cut it at least 50%. Why pay anymore than that for a used one when you can get a new one with a warranty for 50% more?

If the auction is well attended, the lift will likely go for more than its worth. I've seen more than one person pay 80% of new price for Chinese lifts that were several years old.

OTOH, I bought a 12,000 lb Rotary with little use based on appearance out of a bankruptcy auction of a Ford dealership for $1500. Roads were iced up pretty bad that day but the dealership was only about a mile from my house. Had the auction had better attendance, it would've likely brought twice that amount considering the new price at the time was about $7500.

Absolutely. Only takes two idiots to ruin an auction. I have seen used brand x compressors bring more than the price of a new one.

One site shows a Challenger 39000 as a two post 9000 lb. lift and it sells for $1595.00 and it is a used lift http://bencostuff.com/equipment/29/challenger-39000.aspx

This site shows a Challenger 39000 and it was an auction site and the winning bid was $1125.00 http://auction.orbitbid.com/details.cfm?ID=653748

So I imagine that a 9000lb. lift that is new would probably run in the $2200-$2500 range. If it is in great shape and you can get it for $1000 or less, you would be getting a good deal. In comparison, I bought a used 9000lb. WORTH lift off of Diesel Dan for $1500.00 and find that even though used, it was worth every penny of what I paid. It has saved me quite a few times from having to get down on my knees or down on a creeper to work on something. I've also used it as a quick makeshift bench while doing some work in the garage. Some 2x4's and a sheet of plywood, and an instant bench I had. It also comes in handy when getting some heavy items out of the back of my truck.

With the new price around the mid $2,000 range I was hoping it would bring around $1,000 or less but you guys do mention a good point about auctions and that it doesn't take much for the price to get blown up and become unrealistic. Guess I'll just see what it goes for and if it looks good and so does the price I'll grab it, if not, move on and maybe save up for new.

Unless you have seen the lift in operation and had a chance to inspect it before the auction, I would not pay much for it. Pieces go missing, things don't work, and before you know it the used lift was $100 more than a new one would have cost installed by the lift company.

Another thing, remember to check out the fees, most auctions can tack on fees and sales tax, around here that is usually another 15.5%
