Saw this at a garage sale this morning... Best we could figure is it's for filing an edge square or deburring like sheet metal maybe?

The two pieces bolt together and there's a file in the middle. There is a slit that's 90 degrees to the file...

Anyone know it's true purpose?

Was too old / dirty to see a brand name... But it looked pretty old. I don't think those were the original screws.

Saw tooth jointer. Its used with another tool or two that gets a lot of action on what is it on this forum. The saw tooth set that bends ever other tooth to get the saw set that makes the kerf wider than the saw blade to keep it from binding. It also helps to have a saw vice that helps hold the blade as you file them. Do one side of the blade then turn it around and do the other side. My grandfather and his father were both master carpenters and one of the main things they were taught in school was how to sharpen blades and even in some cases to retooth the blade. My grandfather graduated from apprentice school in 1906 so this was before the time of any power tools at all. A sharp saw was essential to the trade. My dad used to take his crosscut saw for him to sharpen.

Intersting... I might go back by the yard sale tomorrow while running errands, see if it's still there. I don't recall seeing anything that looked like a saw setter, but I do remember seeing a small pile of files...
