Another Wilton Vise. Another paint question

I just recently bought another Wilton. This time a machinists 400. It appears to be wearing it's original paint but as it's from 1999 (according to the stamp on the key) it's seen better days and I'd like to strip it down and redo it before I goes into service.

Every posts I've seen says the Hammertone Verde green is as close to the OE as you can get and that is what I painted my Tradesman with but the 400 seems a little darker and "greener" then the Verde which appears "brighter" and "bluer"

I'm not opposed to suing the Verde as I have more left but if you guys might know of a hammertone that would be a closer match to what the 400 is wearing know that would be great.

well, first, you're comparing an old, dirt coated paint job to a nice, new, clean one, so that may be part of your problem. Start by taking some Simple Green or Purple Power (slightly diluted, if you wish) and use a toothbrush to clean off some areas of the vise. See if the paint still looks that different.

Also, keep in mind, that the lighter you go with the Hammertone paint coats the less hammered look you get. I've found that it can also affect the final color you get.

While I admit I didn't clean the entire vise I did clean a test patch and the color is defiantly darker. Even more so then the pics let on if you were to see them in person side by side.

When I painted the tradesman I did experience exactly what you described in regards to the hammering effect and the final coats were layed on so thick I thought it was going to run.

Thankfully it didn't and the end result was great.

Well, if you want it to be darker, other than mixing a custom color, the best suggestion I can give you would be to spray the vise in a dark color prior to using the Verde green hammered and then go light on the coverage. May work?

Based on your pic of the 400, I'm not sure I'd strip it. I agree with Mayer. If you scrub that thing down really good with some Simple Green or your favorite cleaner/degreaser, it really doesn't look like it would need a complete strip.

If it was mine I'd sand the sides of the jaw towers starting with 80 or 120 and working up to 600 or so. That will get rid of the surface rust and will make them look and feel buttery smooth. Do the same to the handle and spindle nose, clean up the jaws and then see where you're at.

Consider going to Sherwin Williams and ask for all surface enamel. They sell it by the quart. Satin probably is closer to original than the gloss.

They can mix it any color in their vast color chart.

Yeah, that was the pic of the good side.

Other side and underneath aren't as pretty.

If this looked like the other side I would just put it to work.

You might be surprised how much of that comes off with a Simple Green bath:

Granted, this is after I wiped it down (and let dry) with boiled linseed oil (BLO):

The other side doesn't look too bad. I'd take it apart, clean lube and grease, clean up the exterior bare metal and that'd be it. She's a beaut!

I like the Verde Green hammered, but it's only kinda close to the original Wilton color, and pretty far from the SK Wayne green. I wish we had more color options on hammered paints. I just wish we could get Verde Green here in Fairbanks!

I spent a lot of time trying to find the correct paint for a Wilton vise. I searched this site and google images. I painted a vise and I discovered that Verde green is not correct. I have a Wilton I purchased new in '87 and compared the repaint to it and it is not right.

I saved this pic of a Wilton that GJ member Joe.striper refurbished. I don't know what color he used and blue isn't even one of my favorite colors but I thought this was beautiful!bf09a0fcaeb6f5e4173de6afeb1d2a58.jpg
If green is more your thing but would like something other than Rustoleum Hammered Verde Green, this Hollands refurbished by GJ member KMScott is done in Rustoleum Hammered Deep Green.a7df301ec309890c9ed8a9bcc6a586ef.jpg
