A few years back, every house in the north end of Tacoma had infestations of tiny black "sugar ants". No house was spared. Hardware stores couldn't keep ant traps in stock.
Since then it's been an annual thing every spring around here as soon as the weather warms up.

The ONLY thing we found that actually killed the little bastards was this stuff:

The recipe on that thread uses way to much boric acid no more than a tbs per cup of sugar for carpenter ants, it works by getting the workers to feed it to the queen.

Permethrin works well around the base perimeter of the house for quick kills

Look for pesticides that are either banned in California or can only be imported a few ounces at a time. Those tend to be the most effective. That’s how I found cypermethrin, which did a job on my ant problem.

Talstar. Available from Amazon or DIY Pest Control. I spray the entire yard, & heavily around the base of the house. Strain full strength Talstar into a hose end sprayer, set the flow for the required rate, & hose the yard. Pretty simple, & any Talstar left in the sprayer can just be put back in the container for later use. No real mixing involved.

That's what I used for the little ones that invaded my kitchen counter and bar a couple of times of the last few years. A little here and there on a piece of wax paper and leave them alone, they'e gone on about three days.

The Borax/sugar combo works good for spreading in knotholes in trees that carpenter ants are actively in. Cleared up my crabapple tree in about four applications.

Terro ant bait. They have a granular that you sprinkle along the outside foundation and bait staions you place in side. They will carry the bait back to nest and kill the colony. Takes a few days but is safe and effective.

for ant hills, like fire ants, about a cup of gasoline will kill the mound in second. ants getting in house talcum powder, they will not cross it, so talcum the window sill, just a lttle and the door threshold

My pest control service tech will drop off a package of Ant Baits when ever I call and ask for them. He stops here for a service every quarter.

Sometimes he really earns his money, other times he just sprays around the perimeter and dusts off the spider webs.

Well, even though this thread is almost a year old, it is about that time for the little buggers to start coming out.
