I have one of those, and its been a very convenient tool for changing engines in older vehicles, loading medium heavy items in a pickup or trailer, etc. The worm-gear winch was missing, so I just hang an old 1 ton worm-gear 'riggers' block' type of chain-fall in the centre (but don't think I'd feel good about lifting more than 1/2 ton or so....I've no idea what its original load rating might have been)

I sent mine to be sand-blasted and powder-painted, and so lost the original painted Weaver logo.

Anyone interested in that one should know that they are designed to be taken apart with a pattern of bolts, and could easily be hauled, in pieces, in a common small pickup, or even in the trunk of a medium-size car (or the back seat of an open touring car, if you prefer 1915 technology).

cheers

Carla

It would be a cool piece to have in my shop....but I don't know if I would ever have a use for it.

The advertisement lists the capacity at 3,000 lbs.

I just pulled up the ad from the link in 1st post. Anyone know how to copy and paste it here for prosperity? We should try to preserve the ad. I know there's lots of Weaver aficionados here.

Yes Carla, if you have any photos they'd be appreciated. The CL ad above has poor photos. The advertisement is excellent so thanks to the OP. I'd like to see the sprockets in the top corners and I guess we're sol on some winch shots.

I'd love to have that set up and do like Carla, use as a basic A-frame.

Gotta love the old Weaver equipment and that's a lot of Gantry for the money. I never have seen one in person but love the old Weaver advertising. The style and font used in the Weaver adds really convey the spirit of the time. I have a few Weaver items and love the brand. Here's the Weaver auto ambulance featuring add which tells a story. How safe is a hoist like this versus a lift (or stands) in practical use?

If you lift the vehicle with a hoist, then place jack stands under it, it is as safe as a standard lift.

If you lift the vehicle with a hoist, and then just get under it..... not as safe.

Modern lifts have hydraulics, with safety locks, and safety cables... so there is redundancy. You don't have that with the 1918 Weaver hoist... after all, the Weaver hoist is almost 100 years old.

The other issue is the cars of the era the Weaver hoist was designed for had front frame horns and frames that could easily be accessed to chain the hoist to for lifting.

That pretty much went by the wayside by the mid to late '30's.

Thanks. The old ad shows somebody under a car with it supported by just the hoist, which looks scary to me. That's more faith than I have on a winch and chain! ;)

This item is right down the road from me. I have to resist going to look at it because I have a feeling I would drag it home.

I have been fighting with myself about going to look at it since the ad was reposted......because I know that if I do drive up there I will bring it home with me.

Concur......I wouldn't allow anyone under a car raised on a floor jack, or otherwise, without having some substantial safety stands or substantial dunnage blocks under the frame or an axle.

cheers
