Hello All-

I got this Anvil from my wife's grandfathers farm. Her father remembers it when he was a boy. Any ideas of the Brand? Bay Hudden? hmmm....I will start a thread when I restore it and may be able to find some markings, after I remove the decades of deposits.

Now here's a thread I can add something too...looks like a hay-budden or Trenton. Should be markings on the side closest to the grinder in the photo and also on the front foot. Richard Postman's book, Anvils in America, describes the differences and has a serial number listing for approximate dating of the anvil. Looks in pretty good condition - I could give you a reasonable estimate of the weight based upon the dimensions of the face (the large rectangular part). I have Postman's book, so if you find the manufacturer and serial #, I'd look it up for you. If you flip the anvil up, a Hay-Budden will have an oval depression in the bottom. I know I could sure it!

Handforged-

Thanks for the info! I'm sure when I start cleaning it up, something will come through. I will keep you posted! The face is about 6" wide and the length is probably 28". The Hardie hole is 1 1/8", if that helps.

Looks like a Peter Wright to me, but I've been wrong before. Whatever it is, it sure has taken some pounding in the area around the beer can.

Thanks for the feedback, yeah some of the edges are fairly beat up, but for free I'm not complaining!

Well, I was looking at a 1927 Hay Budden catalog....so I uploaded the dimension pages from it. Take a look at the measurements and you should be able to get an approximate weight. That is a nice large anvil and I know a number of people that would like to have one that size.

Well, as WWII Jeep said, it could be a peter wright. It is difficult to say which manufacturer. You need to wire brush it off or flap disc (I use 80 or 120 grit) it clean and read the markings. The markings will most likely be on the side facing the grinder, or standing behind the heel with the horn out front, the right side of the anvil.

Wire brush or flap wheel is a good idea. I have a 5" Paramo Vise and I took it down to bare metal. I used the Green Plastic looking 3M Roll Rocks. They work great for body work, my Vise tore through them, and oh...they're not cheap! I started by using paint striper, then degreaser and steam cleaned. Then I used the 3M wheels.
