I'm rebuilding a Honda transmission and this one bearing is discontinued.



Honda number 91004-PHR-003.



It's an NTN bearing and I can find the size 26x72x15.5 mm but what is the /14.5 at the end mean?

NTN part 3TM-SC05B97 looks like the right dimension but without /14.5 and without that shield,

NTN part SF05A84 is the right dimension too and has a shield that looks different.

That's a VERY unusual shield. I have never PERSONALLY seen a shield like that on other shielded bearing. If you're sure that's the bearing, and you can get it at the price shown in the website, I would just get it because:

1. You KNOW it will be right (it appears to be a dealer site)
2. You KNOW it will be a good quality part (because it's sourced by Honda)
3. There may be significance to the design of the shield that you an otherwise not get
4. There's a LOT of counterfeit "name brand" bearings (including the likes of Timken (which is more a "distributor" now days), NTN, Koyo, etc.). You need to be especially careful of sellers on Fleabay.
5. A genuine brand bearing of that size will be within a couple/few dollars at most from that price, so why not just get the one you KNOW is right.

Is that bearing known to cause issues? Why replace it? If it spins freely without noise-possibly run it. If the trans was making noise than maybe.

I'm replacing all the other 10 ball bearings and not replacing the 11th would bug me. No noise but since I have it apart and because it has 225,000 miles, it would help resale being able to say the transmission was rebuilt.

Is anyone an expert in manual trans on a Honda? If it's not available I can guarantee that the one's rebuilding them aren't replacing them either. Why was the trans overhauled to begin with? Not shifting properly? If my older Honda trans thinking cap comes on there was some 5th gear issues with older Accords and or civics but can't remember for sure. What are we dealing with here?

I have it out for a clutch job and while I'm at it, I figured I'd address the 2 common problems these have. 1) Replace the input shaft bearing which wears out and makes noise. 2) Modify the 1st and 2nd gear syncros that cause a grind during downshifting. I already ordered all the other bearings from Honda.

Sometimes somebody will still have it sitting on a shelf. A couple of months ago the local dealer told me a part was impossible to get. I found one in Washington state and another near Dallas. It's a good thing I found the second one because the first one showed up damaged. It also took nearly two weeks to get them both to IL.

Maybe our resident Honda guy can hook you up with someone who rebuilds these and he can tell you what he uses.

Seems odd there are no numbers at all on the bearing, usually they have maker and PN on them.

Have you tried an actual bearing broker. I can't remember the name of the place, but I was able to get bearings for an Audi Quattro unit that the dealer didn't even sell through a broker, just read the numbers off the bearing, and the had them on my door step two days later.

My first job working on cars was at a Ford dealership in a small town (under 1k population). I was asked to take a connecting rod for a 400 Ford to a dealership in the town I lived in (12 k population). They needed one for their wrecker (the service manager there drove the wrecker in off hours and later for a body shop). Why in the world we had a connecting rod in stock for a 400 I will never know but we did.

When I worked at an International Harvester dealer we had a cross reference for the bearings. I was overhauling a Massy Ferguson 135 rear end and used mostly IH bearings in that tractor.
