I'm looking for some coax splitters what brand is the best bang for the money. I'm only looking for models that will pass internet and have a circuit board inside.

What is the difference between a standard splitter and a Tap splitter?:headscrat

You will want a 1Ghz splitter for your newer 2 way cable systems. dont spend a ton of money on them. Just make sure they are 1Ghz

each 2 way splitter drops -3.5db per leg so keep that in mind when you are splitting these connections.

a standard splitter is -3.5db on each leg, however a tap splitter is -1db on one leg and tap on the other usually means -6db loss for the tap

Don't get the very cheapest - the "gold" stuff that looks like ****. But the "second level" home depot, lowes, etc are just fine. No need for an expensive splitter.

Parts Express has some really nice stuff on the cheap. Especially with HDMI cables/etc.

I have Time Warner and I ran some cable with a couple splitters. Started having some problems and ended up calling TW. They came out and told me not to buy splitters, in fact, to call TW and they would come out and run the wire for me. He said they would rather have good materials being used than to have to come back out.

Run quality cable too - everything around here is now RG6 quad shield. We don't do cable, just dish and I split after the DVRs. Haven't had any issues but I do keep the splits to a minimum. Remember that 3db is like losing 1/2 signal strength.

Also, if you have any unused ports on a splitter make sure to get a terminating resistor on the unused port. Ideally you would but a splitter with the exact ports you need and change it out if you need more in the future.

Use the lower loss ports for the longer cable runs. If you have cable modem for internet put it on a lower loss port.

Don't buy the least expensive splitter - The ones from Home Depot are ok, the $1.99 special from the corner drug store I would pass on. I've been able to solve a lot of problems for friends/family/coworkers by replacing an old or inexpensive splitter with one of higher quality.

I work for a company that sells CATV amplifiers, among other things, but I always recommend that my customers replace their splitters with a Quality 1GHz model before making the jump to an amplifier. It's very inexpensive and easy to do.

Thanks everyone this is a big help. I have a few more question.

What is the expected loss from a grounding block?

What gage wire is code for the ground?

Should a in line surge protector be installed? What would be the expected loss on the surge protector?

I'm a Maint. tech for Time Warner, but did installs/trouble calls for almost 10 years before that. Ground block shouldn't be any loss, we are using 12g solid for the ground. I do not know any one who has an inline surge protector. The ones that used to be around, 5-6 years ago were junk. I woudn't bother with one. The biggest thing is to run the modem off the first split.

good luck

I don't know how true it is, but our cable installer told us to put termination caps (?) on any unused outlets for better reception

Most new splitters provided bythe cable companies are self terminating. However we do try eliminate any unused ports, by placing smaller splitters.

Stay far away from Radio shack. Dont use surge protector cable in and out ports they are ****. Find your local cable or satellite guy and ask him to give you some splitters and ask if he can spare some cable. He should help you out. Because he is not going to want to come back and change it all out if you buy cheap stuff. RG6 is the cable you want to use inside you house or garage. Have him come by and check the signal in your house to verify you dont have too much loss.

Hope this helps.. For RG6 coax. For every 25 feet of cable you will drop 1.5 db. 0n a 2 way splitter each leg is 3.5, and on a 3 way splitter it is 3.5,7.0,7.0 , and on a 4 way all legs are @ 7.0 db. So at the back of each TV set you want a minium of +0.0 db. If at the back of the TV set the in put db's are at + 12.0 or more you may see hum bars... I worked for Comcast, good product, but bad place to work..
