The wall where I want to build a long work bench has a window, Unfortunetely the bottom of the window is at about 38-39 inches off the floor. I was hoping for a workbench height in the neighborhood of 42"

Anybody have any pictures of clever design choices to battle this problem?

Just make the counter lower where the window is. Notch it out. Or build 2 separate work benches -- leaving the space under the window open. Then put a lower shelf or a machine in that space.

I would go right across it unless its an inswing casement window. Then you'd have to choose. Just frame up a backspash to keep from pushing stuff over the back edge of the bench.

Personally, I'd hate having my workbench/work space in front of a window. If it were me I'd play with the layout and see if I could place the bench in a different area. But, I know my opinion is likely the minority since I removed 4 windows in my shop and blocked them up.

42" high benches on either side of the window. 36" high under the window. Put a shop stool under the 36" section (counter height) . Sometimes it is nice to have a place that is a bit shorter so you can sit down and work on details, finer work, taller stuff, etc.

Or, based on the pictures it doesn't look like it would be that difficult to just put in a shorter window.

This would be my choice as well.
