Any estimate how much it will cost to replace this old panel?

I have a property with this old panel in it, was thinking up upgrading it to something newer.

Not sure if it’s worth changing out or not. Haven’t had to buy a breaker yet, but they dont seem common.

Any idea what I’m looking to spend to replace this?

why not just spec the price before calling the electricians, 200AMP panels is about $350,,, breakers are about $15 for tandem 1/2 sized ones.

Cutler-Hammer XO panel they been obsolete for over 60 years, some of those breakers in the panel are somewhat rare. Like Zinsco bolt-on breakers, replacements are only available used.

I was under the impression that is they touch the service panel they have to bring anything else that isn't to code up to code. Is everything else already good?

Your location will have a lot to do with the cost of the replacement of your Service Panel.

Your local Authority Having Jurisdiction and your electrical utility most probably will be able to provide you with some guidance about the requirements and procedures.

I pulled my own permit and used a one man contractor who had extremely low overhead. I used my network of providers to locate him. Actually he was recommended by my cabinet maker.

I purchased the materials from Home Depot and used my Military Discount.

Depends on where it's at. Some places, it's only what gets permitted that has to be brought up unless there are obvious visible safety issues.

I don't see a main, so it must be a sub panel. Is the main panel what I can see the edge of around the corner to the right? If it's just replace the sub, it won't be a terrible amount but it's hard to say because the rates are different all over the country.

It is a sub, to the right is a lever type cutoff switch, the main panel is on the front of the building that has the meter and a 200a breaker.

That may be a plus since you might not have to bring the entire service up to code. And since you have a 200 amp meter/main it should be up to snuff already. The grounding and bonding may need to be addressed though. Really, all you can do is get some estimates from local contractors.

Worked on a house where the C-H XO panel (like the OP's) was a main lug & the unprotected service entrance conductors (SE cable) were run halfway across the house to the kitchen where the panel was, it was old as I think SE cable was disallowed here in the late 1950's to early 1960's. My house was moved to it's current location in 1957 & the service from then had SE cable before being decommissioned in 1980.

I'm in Ohio, so the breaker box swap only costs me the price of the box and breakers, lol. I just call the electric company, tell them I'm pulling the meter and to come re-seal it tomorrow. They say OK, I pull the meter, and swap the box. The only pain in the *** is if there isn't enough length on the old wires to reach the new terminals.

So I'll throw in my random number too, but on the low-end, about $300-ish.

A user pulling a meter is not typical and not advisable to most people.

I don't think 'pulling a(n) [energized] meter' is good advice. An arc could occur. If 'Coogar XR' meant that the feed disconnect to the property should have been performed before pulling the meter, he should have mentioned that in the interest of safety.

Only the Poco can pull meters here. If someone else pulls a meter here they get fined

Its also not a good idea for an untrained person to pull a meter.

I paid $1800 to have my panel changed from a 150 to 200amp. I'm on Long Island where I imagine prices might be a bit higher than average

10 years ago I paid an electrician about $2000 to replace an old split bus panel with a new 200 amp Square-D QO panel. However, at that point I only had about 9 circuits in my house, so the breakers didn't add much to the price.

Don’t think I’ve seen CH XO. Power line is what they acquired from Westinghouse, BR from Bryant & CH is their tan handle breakers. Those are the versions I’ve seen much of.

Never saw a Zinsco bolt on. Never heard of them before. This field is deep & wide; more stuff out there than any one guy could ever see.

The NM cables on the left side are stripped a good 6" before they should, and they look like they go through the knockout without a connector

You might be able to get the panel for that price.

thats not NM as it has a green ground wire. NM has bare ground

most likely cordage that was stripped.
I think that's MC, blow up the pic and you can see a little bit of the plastic wrapper. On another note, I have seen NM with a green ground. I don't know the brand, it's older than me. It had a black jacket with a green insulated #16 ground in it and it was a ***** to strip. Maybe one of the older than me guys will remember it and chime in.

What about the (about) 20 breakers?

breakers about $8 each... if you get it from big box, probably about the same at local supplier. Wires are definitely cheaper with local supplier. If you wanted double tandem (1/2 size) it's about $15 each so 5x of $15 would be about $75+Tax =/- few box lets say $100.

if your county requires afci/gcfi ... well then you are screwed. about $70 each + tax... not you per se, the OP that is.

I’m in Ohio too. Funny enough, I remember my dad telling me to just yank the meter if I needed to do work on the panel when we bought our house. Something along the lines of “Just pull the meter and tell them you needed to do some work if they say anything”. Giving them a heads-up seems a little more kosher. Lol.

Also, I want to see where this thread goes since I want to upgrade our panel in the next year or two.
