Any experience with Evapo-Rust Thermocure Cooling System Rust Remover & Flush?

Has anybody used Thermocure cooling system rust remover and flush?

I'm a big fan of the parent product, Evapo-Rust. Does exactly what it claims to do. Definitely recommended.

Any opinions, experience, comments on Thermocure much appreciated.

I'm working on the cooling system of my 1962 Triumph TR3 and was thinking to use this as part of the flush. My main area of concern would be the wet-liner design of the TR four-cylinder engines, where a seal ("figure of eight") is used at the bottom on the liners to seal the block from the cooling jacket. My engine was rebuilt c2010 with new liners and seals. The last thing I want to do is create a problem where there isn't one now by some minor preventive maintenance.

What are those seals made of?

I've used regular Evapo-Rust in gas tanks and other parts where there are rubber seals and plastic parts, and it does not affect them at all. Or put it another way, if this stuff was not safe for rubber and plastics, it would damage hoses, fittings, and seals and would not be safe to use on any vehicle.

I think you'd be perfectly fine to use the Thermocure, but then again I haven't used it.

However, it's worth noting that this product is only effective on rust -- iron oxide. It does not remove or affect other types of corrosion or buildup.

The figure-of-eight seals (Fo8) for the wet-liner Triumph engine are made of either steel or copper. I gotta check with the rebuilder of my engine, Macy's Garage in Tipp City, Ohio, to see what they used. Copper wouldn't bother me with an Evapo-Rust product. Steel, in a sealing application, makes me a little nervous, and hence my question.

How about call Evaporust?

By the way, I was told by the evaporust guys at SEMA that I could pout Evaporust into a dry cooling system/engine and let it sit and the drain it out and flush the engine. The Evaporust can still be reused after that

If it's a steel gasket and it has rusted badly, removing heavy rust can leave pitting.

Then again, if heavy rust is all that's sealing your cylinder liners, they've already failed, or will shortly.

And if they are fairly intact and sealing OK, then the Evapo-Rust wouldn't be able to reach the sealing surfaces of the gaskets anyway, even if the outer edges are rusty.

I still can't see how this stuff would cause a problem, but you may want to talk to the engine builder.

I recently used Evapo-Rust for the first time. I placed a brake caliper in the fluid overnight and the rust was gone and the rubber parts were fine. However, you need to make sure the parts are clean or the Evapo-Rust won't work. The parts I treated that had some oil or grease on them still had the rust. Cleaned the oil and grease off and re-treated came out great.

Bumping this one in case there's any new experience with Evapo-Rust Thermocure within the GJ community.

I obviously haven't tried this stuff yet on my Triumph TR3.

Note regarding the earlier comment to check with Evapo-Rust... Good idea, and I did that before starting this thread a few years ago. Their tech service guys had never heard of a wet liner engine. They had no idea whether Thermocure would be OK or not.

The active ingredient, should have no affect on seals, it is not an organic compound, nor is it an acid. Diammonium Phosphate, odds are the other 1% is potassium phosphate.
$.50 worth of chemical. Diammonium Phosphate is sometimes used in solder flux

Yes, pcmeiners, Thermocure is a significantly different formulation from Evapo-Rust. I'll have to think about what diammonium phosphate might do to clean an engine block. Phosphorus chemistry is pretty complicated.

My thought is that if you have maintained coolant at reasonable change intervals, you're probably OK. I know there's a spec for the green/yellow coolant but if you've ever done it, my opinion is that its fine. Typically overheating via inter-water-jacket corrosion is not a common issue that one hears or reads about.

My old tractors which might have run the same antifreeze for the last (??? - could be 30, 40, 50) years are more suspect but I'd drain it and use the std evapoRust in the block & head.
