With coupons I can get this rail for about $25. Im trying to be as efficient as possible with my cart and this in theory seems like a great idea. If they are junk let me know.

Can you place the sockets on the rail without having to twist/lock them? I feel like that would get old.. thanks for any help or other suggestions.

You can, I don't think they'll stay very well though. Those rails are awesome if they stay in a drawer. Just be aware that if they're dropped from any distance, not only will sockets go flying but the posts will break also. I broke at a least a dozen before I gave up on them. Again though, if they're staying in the drawer, they're quite good.

Have 26 of these, for about 350 sockets....
Yes, locking them in on the rail would get old for me in about 5 seconds, so I checked before buying. They hold the sockets just fine without locking them, they come off the posts without issue. For large socket sets these are great, tried a number of other solutions. Believe I paid <$17/piece with a bit of shopping for the aluminum/magnetic base.

Warning: even by MTS's own admission, they do not work with all sockets. When the lock a socket is unlocked, the ball is loose, when you rotate it, a cam behind the ball pushes it out, locking the socket to the post. The trouble is some sockets have the detent too deep in the socket so when you try and rotate the post, the ball cannot come fully out, you cannot fully rotate and it does not lock. I have heard of people forcing them and thinking they are breaking them in but they are just breaking them. I mounted a set of HF shallow and deep impacts on a couple of them, with no problem. I bought some MTS 3/8"rails and a lot of chrome SK and Williams would not work. Some sockets have no detent at all. If they fit, they are fine but make sure they work with what you plan to put on them. They are out there in a lot of different flavors. Just looking at 1/2", MTS has a 22", 16 post that only would fit in my drawer diagonally, and I think there is a short 12 post version. In between is a Craftsman/ MTS that is 19",14 post. These all are aluminum rail, magnetic back. Then then there are cheaper MTS plastic rails with just a rubber pad on back. Then I see Torin selling the platic rail version at pretty low prices on ebay. They all use the same Lock A Socket posts. I think they are best used for heavy sockets like deep impacts that can fall off a rail with spring loaded balls in the posts. What I have settled on is the Gearwrench rails. They are ball detent, the posts are inside the rail, like lock a socket and I have never broken a post. The rails are glass re enforced nylon, but no magnetic back. They are quicker than the lock a socket, nothing falls off and they are less fussy because like a ratchet, the ball is spring loaded and works with any socket. I will get a couple of more MTS rails for my SAE impacts.

I just up graded all my 3/8 impacts to Mechanics Time Saver with the magnetic strip. Works perfectly, no more falling over or coming of the pegs. Pick up the whole rail and go with it. $15 @ J &B Tool Sales. Onto the 1/2 impacts next.

That is all I use to organize my tools as a tech. I’ve had majority of them for over 2 years and they are still going strong.

You can put sockets on there and not lock them. I’ll see if I remember to put up some pics tomorrow.

I have them in my cart, i like them. The magnet is strong enough they dont tip over when moving the cart. I dont think i ever really lock them. Whats nice is the different size locks fits on all the rails. So i have sets that are 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 all on the same rail.

I never move the rails though, they pretty much stay in my cart so i cant say how well they hold sockets when when locked and being moved or thrown around.

What i like most about them is i can just reach in with one hand and pull the sockets off easy and the magnet is strong enough i dont have to worry about them tipping even with deep 1/2 inch sockets. They also seem to take up the least amount of box space for any socket storage that you can use one hand on.

I dont have the vertical ones though, i have the ones jhn posted

I have all my 3/8 and 1/2 deep sockets on MTS rails. As well as my 1/4 chromes. They are in my road chest. They work awesome. Regular socket rails never seem to retain the deeps for road duty.
