1st post. Great site. Anyone have any pics of a fold-up type of workbench mounted to a wall. Sadly there isnt much room for a bigger one. Thanks.

I just built one last night in my basement for snow ski tuning. I had a piece of 3/4" particle w/ laminate, so I used that. Got the details from an old woodworking magazine a co-worker had with workshop ideas. The article called for a wood top, but I figured 'use what ya got'

Basically its a 2x4 screwed to the wall studs. The worktop lays on top of the 2x4, then attach hinges underneath. 2x2 legs with some little hinges, and entertainment center magnets to hold them to the bottom when folding. Let me know if you'd like more details or clarification.

Aparantly the pics are too big, so I'll try to resize them and get them posted.

Hope this helps.

That's brilliant! I have a nice old 2'x4' piece of melamine from a desk that might serve that exact purpose for occassional use. Very cool. :)

What kind of hinges did you use?

The wall hinges are just plain old 3" door hinges. #8 x 3/4" screws.

Leg hinges are tiny little 1" brass hinges, but I'm already looking for replacements. They are way to small and fragile for the amount of force you could put on them by pushing sideways on the legs.

Will and Matt, Thanks for those ideas and pics. Appreciate it. I have a nice peice of ss and will screw it to a peice of 3/4 plywood. Not sure if I will hinge it up or down yet, but those look like what will work in my little space.

Hey I like that one a lot. Thank you for posting. Going to tinker with one of them this weekend, supposed to warm up again and going to take advantage of it. John

That fold up table is very cool. I did something similar, but didn't have the sliding legs. I had a single car garage in the rent house I was in and didn't have a lot of room either. I don't have any pics, but I think I can describe it.

I wanted to have a little more substantial table that what has been shown so far, I used a 2x4 on the wall and a pair of 3" door hinges, but for the table itself, I framed up some 2x4s 12" apart and nailed 3/4" plywood on top. I think it was 24x60. I mortised the hinges into the 2x4s and added a piece of plywood on top of the 2x4 on the wall so when the bench was down it was a smooth surface with just the hinge barrels sticking up a bit. I used a similar dead bolt to hold the top agains the wall. I didn't use legs that went to the floor, I took a 24x24 square of plywood and cut it diagonally and attached it to the 2x4s on the wall where they could swing out when bringing the top down. I placed them where they would hit a 2x4 on the bottom of the top and put some 1x4s on either side of the 2x4 to make a groove for the triangle support to receive into. The one thing I wished I would have done was to put a piece of 1/4" plywood or masonite to cover the bottom, when the top was up, the 2x4 that ran across the bottom was a perfect shelf to put cans of brake cleaner, WD40, etc, on.
