I moved across the country to be closer to family (for my new son) and I'm about 3 miles from my brother so we're setting up my garage for all the automotive activities, and his new large garage is becoming our gym.

I've gotten some great ideas here for my DIY auto-garage.

Any good ideas for home gyms?
We work with kettlebells, some weights, have two heavy boxing bags, one speedbag and may add an over-under bag. He wants to get some sort of wrestling style floormat for grappling and Jiu-Jitsu work.

Any ideas on vendors, DIY projects, good bracing and builds for home gym garages?

He'll still pull two cars in at night so it has to adapt for that.

Not exactly a gym, but a basketball court. We have 18' of clear overhead space in the far left bay and couldn't resist installing a Goalsetter 54" tempered glass backboard & breakaway rim. Rim height is adjustable from 6.5feet to 10 feet, as my kids are still a little too young to shoot regulation height.

The whole system is a little heavy, so I sistered & blocked the 2x6 wall studs and lag bolted everything in. Both my neighbor and I can hang on the goal with minimal deflection. I figure in a few years I may have teenagers hanging like monkeys off of the rim and I don't want anyone to get hurt by the goal coming out of the wall.

I still plan to get a four-post lift for that bay, but it will have to be on casters so we can move it out of the way to play a quick game of one on one when the need arises.

Dustoff, like the space you have there. I have a few questions since I am comtemplating something similar. Do you have any exterior shots? Im interested in a medium size building, primarily for basketball but also storage of a vehicle or two. I can't decide on a clear span steel building, pole, or stick built. Id like something fairly large for halfcourt basketball and Im guessing at least 18 feet of clearance at the peak. I live in a rural subdivision so space is not an issue. Funds are of course. Would like to stay in the 30k range or below, turnkey. Has anyone on here attempted a building primarily devoted for recreational use? Im in northeast ohio. It gets cold but I dont necessarily HAVE to use/heat the building in the winter....a little help anyone?

Dustoff35. Thats a cool set for the kids, all that is missing is a roll of LED lites across the top of the backboard, going off for every basket made , ala NBA. How about a mini personalized scoreboard up on the wall... 30 seconds and ticking. Nice shop space...H

Am I correct in assuming that concrete wall is underground? Is the building on a steep grade?
Great space!

All we have are normal garages but his soon to be gym is a wide two car detached with an extra 10x10 to the side with a small framed bathroom area.
Once we can attack it we hope to make it nice

You kiddin? Turn a man-cave into a gym? WTF? If I want to workout, I go to the local Golds gym. Man-caves are are wrenching and downing a few colds brews at the end of the day.

I really should start a thread in the gallery section, I found this site a few weeks ago and really enjoy it...

Geaugacounty- Here is an exterior shot:

We went stick built because we wanted it to kind of match the house. Pole barn / metal building look wouldn't fly with the wife. Had to excavate due to the slope, that drove the price up quite a bit. If you have a flat site, it will save you $$$.

Nomad- The grade changes approximately 7 feet from the back corner to the front. Sinking the whole thing into the ground kept the profile of the building down a little bit. The garage is upslope from the house and it doesn't dominate the landscape as it probably would otherwise.

Volvo- Lights and scoreboard would be cool... Know where I can find them?

THat's what my house is for. Watching racing and wrenching is reserved for my house. Watching sports, playing b-ball on his half court and working out is reserved for his house (then we'll get his home recording studio room up and running).

Dustoff - Great garage!

Milton's- Thanks, I'll be needing one of your bell kits once the driveway is complete. I worked summers in a Chevron station in Wyoming when I was in High School and College. I haven't heard that familiar Ding-ding in years...
