Any good ideas on Hurricane Shutter Storage??

I've been lurking for a while, ordered RaceDeck because of you guys and installing them over the weekend. I love it!

1 Car garage. Miami-Dade county so I have Aluminum Shutters, no Shed (yet), not even sure if I can keep em in the shed anyways, but until then, what's the best way to store these guys? Most people down here just put them on top of 2x4's to stay off the floor, anyone come up with crafty ways of storing it out of the way??

I was thinking some type of horizontal mount on the wall, but not sure.... I searched 'Hurricane Shutters' but didn't find much.

Are these the corrugated metal ones that install using wing nuts? If so, could you come up with some type of heavy duty peg on the wall and hang them through one or two of the mounting holes?

Yup those are the ones, with the wing-nut holes... What can I use that is strong enough, yet small enough to fit in those holes??


I was thinking of some huge L shaped bracket or something they can go on, but I don't know where to start.... I like your idea, just don't know what I would use

My FIL had them and they were always in his way.
Not much room in those Florida garages.
Last time I visited, he ditched them and got the roll-ups.

Those look like a mount used for the inverter heat pump A/C units up north. You mount the brackets on the wall of the building to keep the heat pump up out of the snow.

My accordion shutters are self-storing. My PGT large missile impact approved windows saved me the trouble of climbing a ladder to deal with the second floor windows (yeah, I bought the PGT's intended for a hi-rise building. I believe in overkill)

Had them stored in the garage just way you mentioned; horizontal rack with wing nut fasteners, close to the garage door opening. Last thing you want to face is having dig them out or hoist them down when everything starts to happen real fast. Plus you want to be able to re-store them easy as well.

Has anyone ever considered building custom boxes mounted to the outside of the house close to where the shutters go for storage. I'm considering something like that. My idea is this:

Composite decking for the boxes. Basic build, Just a box to cover them while they are stored. Haven't decided on whether or not they will have an opening from the front or just mount and hang on the wall to cover the shutters when not in use. Color of decking will be selected to match the decor of the house as close as possible. Likely a grey tone.

Tapcon bolts into the stucco and block for mounting.

Pretty simple, but get s them out of the garage, close to where they will mount, and be neatly covered when not in use.

Thoughts?

By the way, this is for a Florida home, closer to the East Coast of Florida.

When we lived in the Houston area I cut plywood sheets for each window and marked their locations on each sheet to make installation easier. For storage I had about 18" between the ceiling and the open garage door. I made a rack to store them out of 2X4's that bolted to the ceiling joists; one on each side of the garage opener track. It's just otherwise wasted space in the garage. When needed it was simple to take them down, install them and then restore them after the threat had passed.

My older brother in central Florida has his cut plywood sheets stored up against one wall in his shed.

Mine fit nicely together between the joists in my shed. They are the right width and you can stack 8 or 10 in the space of a 2x6 wall. i have a piece of poly pipe that slips in a couple of pipe mounts to keep them from falling out. They are mounted high on the wall and sit on a piece of blocking that is between the studs.

My uncle lived in Corpus Christi many years ago. His backyard fence doubled as storage for the wooden coverings he used to cover his windows when a hurricane warning was issued. He had all the pieces engraved as to where they fit on the house. The nice part of his plan was it saved his fence as all that was left to catch the wind were the poles and the cross pieces that held the "pickets." (He was an engineer.)

Seems like a shed would be a good solution. Do you have HOA restrictions?
